IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-BRUSH ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 6,423, dated May 8, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AGDALENA S. GOODMAN, of the county of Duval, and State of Florida, have discovered a new and useful material -viz., the cabbage-palmetto-for the manufacture of brooms, brushes, and matting, which from its durability greatly surpasses any other article now in use.
The process of manufacturing the broomsand brushes is simply by taking the branches of said tree, and first steaming, pounding the butt-ends, (or that portion which grows to the tree,) combing the same, and applying the flat surfaces of two branches (previously planed or dressed off) together, and fastened with screws or rivets, (in the case of double or a single brush may be made by cutting the handle,
which is a portion of the same, to any desired length. The portion used for matting is the fibers obtained from the butt-end ot'the branch prepared in the same manner-bysteamingand pounding.
What I claim as my improvement and discovery, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The application and adaptation of the branches of the cabbage-palmetto tree to the manufacture of brooms and brushes, the handle being a portion of the same, as described.
