TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERNi Be it known that I, JAMES HITCHENS, of Nevada City, Nevada county, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Grinding and Pulverizing Ores, Minerals, and Organic Substances and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person. skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appcrtains to make and use my said invention or improvements. without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention is to provide an improved ore pulverizer by which ore that has been partly pulverized can be reduced to an impalpable'powder, thereby greatly facilitating the subsequent process of amal gamating the precious metals which it contains. 'This end is-attained by providing a flat, smooth plate of iron or other metal or material having longitudinal guides, between which is placed a low cylinder,'open at botton'i' and top, and of suflicient weight. This cylinder is actuated by means of a crank, eccentric, or other suitable mechanism, and moves forward and back-between the guides upon the plate. The ore is placed in the cylinder arid gradually passes out beneath it, becoming thoroughly triturated by attrition and the lower edge. To more fully explain my invention. reference is had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is an isometrical projection.
Figure 2, a side view with sectional elevation of the cylinder. I
A is a. cylinder of cast iron or other material or metal, and made sufficiently heavy, the sides being of suitable thickness. This cylinder, which is open at the bottom, sets upon a smooth .plate, also of iron or other material. Two guides C C are attached to this plate longitudinally, and serve to keep the cylinder in a. line while moving. A band or strap, G, encircles the. cylinder, being supported about midway by a shoulder or otherwise. To one side of this band, in the direction of the motion, is attached the connecting-rod D, which, with theband and cylinder, is actuated by the crank-pin on the wheelE, motion being commlinicatedfrom the beltwheel The, cyli-nder'A being half filled with partly pulverized ore, has a reciprocating motion communicated toit by the crank, and moves back and forward upon the plate B. Portions of the ore find their way beneath the edge of the cylinder at each motion, and by its weight are reduced to an impalpable powder and discharged over the edge of the plate. If it be foundnecessary, an eccentric may be placed on the shaft, having an arm which serves as a pawl, while a ratchet-wheel may be attached to the circ'umferencepf the cylinder; so that at each motion it would be partiallyrevolved, thus correcting any tendency of the bottom or grinding edge. to wear into grooves. I 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An ore pulverizer, consisting of the containing cylinder A and the supporting plate B, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
