SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,210, dated January 30, 1900. Application filed May 9, 1899. Serial No. 716,120- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH DEUTESFELD, manufacturer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 91 Bachstrasse, free town of Hamburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Folding Carriages for Invalids or Infants, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention herein described and explained by the accompanying drawings has reference to a folding carriage for infants and invalids which in comparison with other known carriages of the same class is characterized by its portability and the facility with which-it can be changed from a chair-carriage into a camp-bed.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the improved carriage.

Figure 1 shows a front view of the carriage; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, the carriage folded up; Fig. 4, the camp-bed; Fig. 5,- the babycarriage.

As may be seen from the drawings, the seat of the carriage is made up of a frame, which below consists of an axle a, on which are two arms 3) to be attached firmly to the axle by means of adjustingscrews or by some other suitable means. These arms have a voluteshaped extension-piece at the upper end and are connected bya cross-bar cl. The curved ends serve as a handle for pushing the carriage. On the axle o supports h 2' 7.: for the wheels 6 f g are also fastened by means of adjusting-screws or some other suitable device, the support h of the wheel e being in the middle of the axle a and being also able to pass between the arms I), while the other two supports 2' and 7t are so arranged that when the carriage is folded they can be brought into line with the arms I) by loosening the adj usting-screws, so that all the supports 7L 2' 7t are in the same plane as the arms b. To give greater portability, the wheels, which run in forks, may when the carriage is folded up be twisted around ninety degrees by adj listingscrews, as shown in the case of the wheel 6. The supports 2' 7;: can also be placed outside the arms 11 without affecting the prim ciple of the invention. It the chair is required for pushing purposes, the surface m serves as a seat and the surface 11. as a back rest, while the angular support, which when the carriage is folded up tilts up on a hinge 0", serves as a foot rest. The seat and back-rest are made of canvas or other suitable mate rial, which is extended downward and at tached to the foot-rest.

If the carriage is to serve as a stationary camp-bed, the adj usting screws of the arms I) are loosened and the latter are let down to the ground, as shown in Fig. 4. To obtain support on either side, the back-rest n is attached to the arms I) on each side.

To convert the carriage into a babycarriage, the arms b are removed from the axle a, and supports q are affixed to the latter, on which supports the arms I) are arranged in a horizontal position. The baby-carriage as described here is illustrated in Fig. 5.

Small structural alterations-such as the application of special supports, choice of materials, &c.are of no moment and can be effected without affecting the nature of the invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination, an axle, arms terminating in collars to receive the axle, extension-pieces for the arms, supports having collars mounted on the axle, means for attaching the collars to the axle, a canvas extended from the axle to the cross-bar of the extension-pieces, as and for the purpose described.
