STEM-WINDING WATCH.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILSON E. PORTER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Imprcvementin Stem-Winding and Stem-Setting Watches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvementin stem-windin g and stem-sett-in g watches of the type shown and described in United States Patent No. 590,856, issued to the New Haven Clock Company under date of September 28, 1897, on my application, the object of the present invention being to make simple and durable provision for what is known as ratcheting back, which is nothing more than turning the crown and winding and setting stem from left to right, which is done in winding the watch as a matter of convenience in manipulating the crown between the fingers.
With these ends in View my invention consists in the combination, in a stem-winding watch with a winding-wheel and a ratchetwheel, of an annular intermediate windingwheel, a non-rotatable vibratory disk upon which the said intermediate winding-wheel is mounted, and means passing through the said disk forholdingit against movement during the winding rotation of the said intermediate wheel and allowingit to reciprocate during the ratcheting-back rotationLof the wheel, which is thus allowed to free itself from the ratchet-wheel.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Inasmuch as myinvention relates to the single feature of ratcheting back, I have chosen to show and describe only that feature with such allied instrumentalities as are necessary for clarity.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ an annular intermediate winding-wheel A, normally engaged with the winding-wheel B and the ratchet-wheel C, but mounted so as to free itself from the ratchetwheel during the operation of ratcheting back, when the said intermediate winding-wheel is free to vibrate or reciprocate. The said wheel A is mounted for rotation upon and reciprocation with a disk D, just enough smaller in external diameter than the internal diameter of the wheel to permit the same to turn freely upon it. The said disk is held against rotation and permitted to reciprocate by its formation with a diametric slot E, receiving a flattened bearing F, formed upon a stud G, having a head H, which engages with the outer faces of the disk and wheel to hold them in place, the stud itself passing through the rear movement-plate I, upon the inner face of which it is headed down, as shown in Fig. 2. The said wheel A is maintained in normal engagement with the Winding-wheel B and the ratchet-wheel C by means of a spring J, secured to the inner-face of the rear movement-plate I and projecting outward through an opening I formed therein and engaging with the said wheel A, so as to push it from right to left, the movement of the wheel in that direction being limited by the engagement of the bottom of the slot E in the disk D with the right-hand end of the bearing F of the stud G. The winding-wheel B is rotated in one direction or the other by means of a rotatable winding-stem, which is not shown, but which may be of any approved construction, and which is provided with a crown K, located within a ring L, secured to the watch-pendant M. The ratchet-wheel C may also be of any approved construction and coacts with a spring-actuated ratchet N. When the winding-wheel B is being turned from right to left for winding the watch, the winding-wheel A will rotate upon the disk B, which will remain stationary or substantially stationary. On the other hand,when the crown is turned from left to right for ratcheting back the winding-wheel B will be turned in the opposite direction and carry the intermediate winding-wheel and disk with it until the teeth of the said Wheel are freed from the teeth of the ratchet-Wheel, after which the intermediate Winding-wheel and its disk will be pushed from right to left by means of the spring J, but only to be moved from left to right again by means of the winding-wheel B. This reciprocation back and forth of the intermediate winding-Wheel and disk will be kept up as long as the ratcheting-back movement of the winding-Wheel B is continued.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
1 do not in this application broadly claim a vibratory intermediate Winding and setting wheel, as I have reserved that claim for another application filed of even date herewith.
Having fully described'my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stem-winding Watch, the combination with a winding-wheel and a ratchet-wheel, of an annular intermediate winding-Wheel, a
nonrotatable reciprocatory disk upon which the said intermediate winding-wheel is mounted, and means passing through the said disk for holding it against movement during the winding rotation of the wheel and allowing it to reciprocate during the ratcheting-back rotation thereof.
2. In a stem-Winding watch, the combination with a winding-Wheel and a ratchet-Wheel, of an annular intermediate winding-wheel, a non-rotatable reciprocatory disk formed with a diametric slot, and having the said intermediate winding-wheel mounted upon it, and. a stud adapted to confine the disk and intermediate winding-wheel in place, and formed with a bearing passing through the slot of the disk, and shaped to hold the same against ro tation, and arranged to prevent the reciprocation of the disk and the said intermediate winding-wheel during the Winding rotation of the said wheel, and to permit them to recipro-' cate during the ratcheting-back rotation of the Wheel, which is thus allowed to free itself from the ratchet-wheel.
