To all whom it may concern:

Beit known thatI, ISAACME. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Canopies,of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to an improvement in canopies for hammocks, the object being to provide an improved device for mounting the canopy upon the ridge-pole of a hammocksupport, the said device being so arranged that the canopy may be securely clamped in dierent tilting adjustments relative to the support as may be desired by the occupant of. the hammock carried by the support.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through the. canopy, showing its method of attachment to the ridge-pole of a hammocksupport, the said canopy being represented in dotted lines in one of its tilted positions.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partially in section, showing the means for retaining the canopy-ribs in their extended position. Fig.

3 is a similar View of the parts taken at right` angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail top plan view of the center of the canopy with the cloth removed. Fig. 5 is an inverted transverse section of the parts shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a detail top plan view of the bracket for spacing the side bars of the ridge-pole apart.

A portion of a'hammock-support is represented in the accompanying drawings, the ridge-pole being denoted by a and the supporting-legs by h and o. The ridge-pole is shown herein as being com-posed of two side bars being rigidly spaced apart by a suitable bracket d. A pair of stationary supportinguprights 1 2 are arranged to be supported by the ridge-pole upon opposite sides of the central bracket d. These supporting-uprights are adapted to fit snugly between the side bars of the ridge-pole, and they are provided with laterally-extended arms 3 4, which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the said side bars and lap over a portion of their outer sides. The said supporting-uprights 1 2 are further provided with upwardly-extended portions, which are adapted to receive between them a swinging bolt 5, which bolt is hinged at its lower end between the uprights 1 2 by means of a hinge-pintle 6. This bolt 5 is provided with a pair of laterally-extended wings 7 and 8 at a point a short distance from its hinged end opposite the upper ends of the supporting uprights 1 2. An elongated slot 9 is formed through the bolt and the win gs 7 and 8, which slot is concentric with the hinge-pintle 6. A screw-bolt 10 passes th rough the upper ends of the supporting-uprights 1 2 and also through the slot 9 in the swinging bolt 5. A clamping-nut 1l engages the screw-threaded end of the bolt exterior to the. supporting-upright, whereby the swinging bolt 5 may be clamped at dierent angles relative to the supporting-uprights carried by the ridge-pole.

A central socket-piece 12 is secured to the upper end of the swinging bolt 5 between a shoulder thereon and a suitable nut and washer 14, which engages the screw-threaded end of the said bolt. A plurality of radial ribs 13 are hinged at their inner ends to the said central socket-piece. The radial ribs are held in their extended position by means of a lock-washer 15, which when in its holding position is supported upon the upper ends of a pair of feathers 16 17 ,which feathers extend along the sides of the bolt downwardly intoy proximity to the winged portion thereof.

The washer 15 is provided with suitable grooves, so that when it is desired to release the ribs 13 to permit the said ribs to be folded the washer is rotated until its grooves correspond with the feathers 16 17 ,when the washer Will be permitted to drop out of the Way of the inner ends of the said ribs. This Washer when in its operative position serves to effectually lock the ribs in their extended position, thus preventing the canopy from being buckled by wind or from any other canse.

By means ot' the structure hereinabove described the canopy may be tilted to any desired position and there firmly secured ina very simple and elective manner. Furthermore, the canopy may be very quickly and readily removed from the ridge-pole or placed thereon, as may be desired.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the IOO spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but

Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination with the ridge-pole of a hammock-support, of a stationary upright carried thereby, a swinging bolt hinged to the upright, the said bolt being provided with an elongated slot concentric with its hinge-pivot, a canopy-frame carried by the Swingin g bolt and a clamping-bolt passing through the said slot and the stationary upright for clamping the swinging bolt to the upright in different tilted ad just-men ts, substantially as set forth.

In combination a bolt, a oanopyframe comprising a central socket-piece removably secured to the bolt, ribs hinged to the socketpieee and means for clamping theribsn their extended position comprising a slidin g washer havingafeather-and-groove connection with the bolt belowr the socket-piece, the featherand-groove Connection between the washer and bolt extending only part way'to the socketpieee whereby the washer may partially rotate when in proximity to the ribs to hold the washer in its locked position, substantially as herein set forth. l

3. The combination with the ridge-pole of a hammock-support, of a pair of stationary supporting-uprights carried thereby, aswinging bolt hinged between the uprights, the said bolt being provided with an elongated slotcoucentrie with its hinge-pivot, a canopyframe carried by the swinging bolt and a clamping device comprising a bolt passing through the said elongated slot and the two supporting-uprights and a clamping-nut engaging the said bolt for clamping the swinging bolt in diiferent tilted adjustments, substantially as set forth.
