To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNIE TERESA KIN- CAID HAWLEY, of Delhi, in the parish of Richland and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Curtain-Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front View of the invention in Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the ornamental bar, which, if desired, may be employed in the manner hereinafter described. The curtain-supporter com prises a metallic or other tube 5, formed with a longitudinal slot 6, extending throughout the same. One end of the tube has rigidly fastened thereto a head 7, and the other end of the tube is open and supplied with a head 8, removably ral spring 12, one end of which is fastened rigidly to the head 7 and the other end of which is fastened rigidly to the head 8. The spring 12 is provided at each coil with ahook 14, these hooks being fastened rigidly to the spring and projected through the slot 6 to engage the curtain, as shown. The head 7 is provided with a hook 16,adapted to be engaged with the curtain at one side edge thereof, and

the head 8 is provided with a similar hook 17, adapted to engage the other side of the curtain.

In applying the curtain to the supporter the head 8 should have its catches 9 disenj gaged from the staples 10, and the head should be drawn out to the right (see Figs. 1 and 3) until approximately one-half the length of the spring 12 is drawn out of the tube 5. Then the head 8 should be held in this extended position and the curtain stretched along the front of the supporter between the two heads and connected with the several hooks 16, 14, and 17 at equidistant points. Then the spring 12 should be permitted to retract, drawing the head 8 into engagement with the tube 5 and permitting the catches 9 to be locked with the staples 10. This brings the hooks 14 into close proximity, as shown in Fig. 1, and causes the curtain to be hung in regular and graceful folds.

For the purpose of hiding the hooks 14 a bar 18 may be provided. This bar, which is shown broken away in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 5, is preferably constructed of ornamental metal open-work but it is obvious that it may have any desired form so long as it ex tends in front of the hooks 14 and covers the same. The bar 18 is held in'place by the hooks 16 and 17, with which the ends of the bar respectively are engaged.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a curtain-supporter, the combination of a tube having a longitudinal slot formed therein, one end of the tube being open, a head removably engaging the said end, a retractile coil-spring fitted in the tube and having one end secured to the removable head, and fastening devices for the curtain, such devices being engaged with the coils of the spring and projecting slidably through the slot in the tube.

2. In a curtain-supporter, the combination of a tubular body portion, heads fitted in the ends of the body portion, a retractile spring carried thereby in the body portion and extensible longitudinally therewith, the ends of the :spring being fastened to the heads, fastening devices for the curtain, attached to the spring and having guided movement longitudinally on the body portion, fastening devices attached to the heads for holding the outer portions of the curtain and a bar having connection with the last-named fastening devices, the bar lying in front of the firstmentioned fastening devices to obscure the same. 7

3. A curtain-supporter, comprising a tube formed with a longitudinal slot therein, a head fixed to one end of the tube, a second head provided With means for removably connecting it with the other end of the tube, a

retractile spiral spring the ends of which are respectively attached to the heads, fastening devices for the curtain, connected with the coils of the spring and projected through the slot in the tube, such fastening devices being slidable longitudinally in the slot, and additional fastening devices respectively attached to said heads.
