Be it known that I, HARTWELL A. CRosisY, of Calais, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in lamp-burners, and comprises the novel features which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention is an improvement upon the form of burner shown and described in my United States Patent No. 566,666, dated August 25, 1896. In the burner shown and described in said patent it has been found that the toothed wick-elevating wheel is apt to catch its point upon the end of the bar by which the frame is swung, and thus to prevent the frame from swinging down against the side of the wick-tube and the trimmer or extinguisher-plate at the upper end of the frame from swinging over the top of the wicktube. One object of my invention is to correct this fault.

In the drawings, it represents the wicktube, which is in the main constructed like the ordinary wick-tube, the principal difference being that the upper end of the wicktube in my invention is slightly beveled or sloping, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the object of the same being to permit the free swing of the trimmer or extinguisher-plate E.

Mounted upon the edges of the wick-tube by means of pivots h is a swinging frame, which consists of the two side bars B, the top bar E, which forms the trimmer or extinguisher-plate, and the bar B, which connects the lower portion of the side bars B. The

frame is so mounted that the upper bar E may swing over the upper end of the wick-tube and inclose the same, thus putting out the light when the wick is turned below the end of the wick-tube.

In the burner as constructed in accordance with the drawings of the patent referred to it has been found that gas collecting under the trim mer or extinguishenplate E after the lamp has been lighted sometimes will ignite, thus causing; a flickering or jumping flame. In order to prevent this, the plate E, which closes the upper end of the wick-tube, is provided with a series of perforations e, through which the gas may escape. This permits the gas as soon as formed to escape, when it will be con sumed with a steady flame.

In the lower end of the swinging frame is journaled a cross-bar F, which is of triangular cross-section, so as to fit in the notches in the toothed wheels D, by which the wick is raised and lowered. The toothed wheels D are similar to the toothed wheels ordinarily used for this purpose and are mounted upon a shaft or stem D, which extends to the outside of the burner and is provided with the usual thumb-wheel D, by which it may be turned to raise or lower the wick.

The wick-tube is provided with openings d, through which the ends of the teeth may project to engage the wick. When the wick is turned upward, the revolution of the wheels D causes the bar F to be swung outward, carrying with it the lower portion of the frame and swinging the upper end of the frame and the extinguisher plate E thereon away from over the end of the wick-tube, thus permitting the wick to rise. When the wick is turned down, the extinguisher-plate E is permitted to swing over the upper end of the wick-tube as soon as the wick has fallen below the same, thus quickly putting out the light. In doing this the cross-bar F, which is journaled in the lower end of the frame, will drop between two teeth upon the wheels D, and the wheels are thus locked against further turning in this direction. This bar therefore forms a lock to prevent the wick from be ing turned downward too great a distance.

As the bar F is journaled in the frame, it is impossible for the points of the teeth to engage the bar in such a way as to prevent its swinging close to the wick-tube. It is thus certain that the extinguisher will be placed over the end of the wick-tube.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a lamp-burner, the combination of a wick-tube, and a wick-elevating device, comprising a revoluble toothed wheel outside of the wick-tube and adapted to engage the wick, with a frame pivoted upon the wick-tube and having a member adapted to swing over and cover the end of said tube, and a triangular bar journaled in the lower end of the frame and adapted to be engaged by the toothed wheel, whereby the frame is swung and the end of the wick-tube is uncovered when the wheel is turned in one direction, and the lowering wheel, of a pivoted extinguisher having at its lower end a rotatable member adapted to be engaged by the toothed wheel, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a lamp-burner, the combination with a wick-tube, and a toothed wheel for engaging the wick to raise and lower it, of a pivoted extinguisher-frame having a cross-bar journaled in its lower end, said cross-bar being adapted to be engaged by the toothed wheel, substantially as described.

As a new article of manufacture, an extinguisher adapted to be pivoted to a wicktube, and consisting of a frame, formed of two side bars, a perforated cross-bar, secured to the upper ends of the sidebars, a triangular bar journaled in the lower ends of the side bars, and an intermediate cross-bar, as set forth.
