ROBERT S. SIEPIIENSON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOBJ OIF ONE-HALF TO .lOl-IN S. GRAIIAM, OF SAME PLACE, AND SAMUEL S. BALDWIN, OF NEV CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,427, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed .Inno 5, v1899. Serial No` 719,384. (No model) T0 @ZZ whom, may concern:
13e it known that I, ROBERT S. STEPHEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoves, and has special reference to laundry-stoves for burning gas.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple form of laundry-stove for the burning of natural gas in an economical and practical manner, as well as one which will provide for a great heating surface therein.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts,as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use the stove, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which--n Figure 1 is a top view of a laundry-stove, showing my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a crosseriection thereof.
Like letters herein indicate like parts in cach of the iigures of the drawings.
My improved laundry-stove is shown at 1 and is provided with the base 2, having the air-spaces 3 therein, and to which are'connected the legs 1i for supporting the stove 1. Removably iitting on top of the base 2 is the hollow member i', which is provided with the side troughs or channels 5, front trough or channel 6, and back trough or channel7 therein, and removably fitting over the top of the hollow member 1 is the top or cover of the stove 1, which is provided with the side trough or channel 9, front trough or channel 10, and back trough or channel 11 therein, which are opposite to and correspond with the side troughs or channels 5, front trough or channel G, and back trough or channel 7 in the hollow member a', and are adapted te form the side [lue 12, front flue 18, and rear flue 14E. The top or cover 8 is provided with the openings 15 for the reception of the lids 15 therein and the `[lange 16 thereon, which extends around an opening 16 for connecting a draft or chimney pipe thereto. Burners 17, having gas-orifices 17 therein, extend hori zontally across the interior 1 of the stove 1 and are supported within base portion 2 and hollow member Li of the stove 1, and air-mixers 18 are connected to the ends of the burners 17 and form part of valves 19, which are connected to a gas-supply pipe 20. Openings 21 are formed in the sides and back of the walls S of the top or cover 8 and within the sides and back of the inner walls 4; of the hollow member t for the entrance of the products of combustion from the burners 17 to the side :iiues 12, front ilue 13, and rear flue 14, and plates 22 and 23, having airbpenings 22' and 23 therein, are supported within the base portion 2 of the stove l for the supplying of cold air to the burners 17 to aid combustion.
The operation of my improved laundry-- stove is as follows: The parts of the stove 1 being in position and the gasvalves 19 opened to allow the gas to enter the burners 17 through the mixers 18 from the supply-pipe 20, the escaping gas can then be ignited at the orifices 17 of the burners 17, and the gas as it issues therefrom and burns will be directed against the top or cover 8 on the 0bjects thereon to heat the saine. The products of combustion from the burners will pass through the openings 21 in the walls Lt" ofthe hollow member Lt under the cover S into the side flue 12, front line 13, and rear flue 1t and travel around the same to escape through the opening 1G of thc cover 8 into the draft or chimney pipe connected thereto.
It will thus be seen that my improved laun dry-stove is cheap in its construction and operation and by its use great heating and radiating surface is obtained by the lues used for the passage of the products ofcombustion, as well as a great saving in the economical use of the gas consumed therein.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stove, the combination of gas-burirY ers located therein, a box fitting above said gas-burners and provided with fines therein communicating with the draft or escape pipe and a series of openings in the inner walls of said box adjacent to the top thereof adapted to connect the flues with the interior of the stove for the passage of the products of combustion from the interior of the stove to the ilues and escape-pipe.
2. In a stove, the combination of gas-burners located therein, a box fitting above said gas-burners and provided with iiues therein communicating` with the draft or escape pipe, a top or cover fitting over said box, and a series of openings in the inner walls of said box adjacent to the top or cover adapted to connect the ues with the interior of the stove for the passage of the products of combustion from the interior of the stove to the fines and escape-pipe.
3. In a stove, the combination of gasburn ers located therein, a base portion, a hollow portion on said base portion and provided with troughs or channels therein, a top or cover fitting over said hollow portion and adapted to form Iiues by said troughs or channels therein for the passage of the products of combustion tothe draft or escape pipe, and
openings in the sides of said tlues connecting the same with the interior of said stove for the entrance of the products of combustion into said lines.
4. In a stove, the combination of gas-burners located therein, a base portion, a `hollow member fitting over said base portion and provided With a trough or channel therein, a top or cover fitting over said hollow member and `provided with a trough or channel therein corresponding to and opposite the trough or channel in the hollow member, said troughs or channels forming ues for the passage of the products of combustion to the draft or escape pipe, and openings connecting said iiues with the interior of said stove for the entrance of the products of colnbustion into said flues.
5. In a stove, the combination of gas-burners located therein, a base portion, a hollow member itting over said base portion and provided With a trough or channel extending around the same, a top or cover fitting over said hollow member and provided with a trough or channel extending around the same corresponding to and opposite the trough orA 'day of May, A.
