UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
LUCIUS L. GULVER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI; MARY CULVER EXECUTRIX OF SAID LUOIUS L. CULVER, DECEASED.
ADJUSTABLE WATER-TANK FOR STOVES OR RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,106, dated December 26, 1899.
Application filed December 21, 1896. Renewed November 15, 1899- Serial No. 737,128. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUcIUs L. CULVER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Water-Tanks for Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a shiftable watertank for stoves or ranges so supported that it may be moved freely into or out of contact with the stove or range, thereby permitting the separation of the tank readily from direct contact with the heating-surface when the water contained in it has become heated to the boiling-point.
My invention consists in features of HOV? elty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I illustrates a vertical cross-section through the fire-box of a stove or range and through the tank on section-linel I, Fig. II. Fig. II illustrates a horizontal section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III shows in perspective a portion of the tank-holding frame or carriage which is provided with pendent studs at the front and at the rear. Fig. IV shows in perspective the end portion of one of the tanksupporting brackets over which the studs fit.
In the drawings, 1 designates the fire-box of a stove or range, and 2 the fire-back pocket thereto.
3 designates brackets secured to the stove on the outside at or beneath the level of the bottom of the fire-box. The brackets 3 are each provided at the top with slideways 3, having at their outer ends notches 4 on opposite sides of the brackets.
5 designates a shiftable tank provided at its rear with an extension 6, that is arranged to be brought into contact with the inner wall only of the back pockets 2 of the stove or range, thus leaving a space around the extension.
7 designates a sliding frame or carriage of a form corresponding to the shape of the bottom of the tank 5. This sliding frame or carriage is in cross-section in the form of a horizontal flange 7 and a vertical flange 7", thus constituting an angle in crosssection,in which the bottom of the tank is removably seated or rests and is held from accidental escape.
On the under side of the seat portion of the sliding frame or carriage are pendent studs 8, that embrace or fit over the edges of the slideways 3 of the brackets 3 and permit endwise movement of the sliding frame or carriage 7, and consequently of the tank 5. On the under side of the sliding frame or carriage, at its front portion, are pendent studs 9, that fit in the notches 4 of the slideways 3 of the brackets 3. These pendent studs 9, fitting in the notches 4, prevent endwise movement of the sliding frame or carriage 7 and also serve as stops to limit the forward or outward movement of the sliding frame or carriage 7When the tank is drawn forward or outward away from the fire-back pocket 2. By this arrangement the water-tank may be moved freely inward on the slideways 3 of the brackets 3 until the extension 6 comes in contact with the fire-pocket, where the tank will receive direct in fiuence from the heat within the firebox 1 in order to warm the water within the tank. On the water in the tank reaching boiling-point the tank may be drawn away from contact with the fire-back pocket by slid- 8o ing the frame or carriage 7 upon the slideways 3 of the brackets 3. The studs 9, engaging in the notches 4 of the slideways 3 of the brackets 3, limit the movement of the sliding frame or carriage and prevent the accidental withdrawal of the tank, with its sliding frame or carriage, from the brackets. The manner in which I support the water-tank upon the frame or carriage 7 renders it readily removable and replaceable for refilling or 0 cleaning.
When the tank 5 is shifted away from the vertical wall of a stove or range, there will be a space left between the tank and the stove or range, as is clearly shown in Fig. IV, and a circulation of air is consequently permitted between the tank and. the wall of the stove, thereby lessening'the effect of the heat upon the tank and the Water contained therein and preventing the water from continuing to boil in the tank after the tank has been shifted away from the heated surface of the stove or range.
I am aware that it is old to removably 10- cate a water-tank on an oven, the tank being provided with a water-leg or projection adapted to fit in a slot or opening in the wall of the fire-box of the stove and extend into the fire-box, and such I do not claim; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stove or range; of a support forming slideways extending from the stove or range, a sliding frame or carriage adapted to be moved freely to and fro on the support, and a Water-tank mounted on said sliding frame or carriage Whereby the inner face of the tank is moved into or out of contact with the Wall of the stove or range; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a stove or range; of a support forming slideways extending from the stove or range, a sliding frame or carriage adapted to be moved freely to and fro on the support, and a Water-tank having an extension and mounted on said sliding frame or carriage whereby the extension is moved into or out of contact with the Wall of the stove or range; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a stove or range; of brackets extending from the stove or range, a sliding frame or carriage having pendent studs fitting the brackets so as to guide the sliding frame or carriage in its movement to and from the stove or range, and a Water-tank having an extension and mounted on said sliding frame or carriage whereby the extension is moved into or out of contact with the wall of the stove or range; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a stove or range; of the brackets provided with notches at their outer ends, a sliding frame'or carriage having pendent studs fitting the brackets at their inner ends and also having pendent studs fitting in the notches at their outer ends, and a water-tank havingan extension and mounted on said sliding frame or carriage whereby the extension is moved into and out of contact with the wall of the stove or range; substantially as described.
5. The combination of a stove or range having a fire-box provided with a fire-back pocket, the brackets having slideways, a sliding frame or carriage mounted on the slideways, and a water-tank having an extension insertible in said pocket and adapted to be placed in contact or out of contact with the inner wall of the pocket, leaving a space surrounding the extension; substantially as described.
6. The combination of a stove or range having a fire-box provided with a fire-back pocket, the brackets having slideways provided with notches, the sliding frame or carriage having pendent studs embracing the slideways and pendent studs fitting in the n0tches,and a Water-tank seated on the frame, having an extension insertible in said pocket and adapted to be placed in contact or out of contact with the inner Wall of the pocket, leaving a space surrounding the extension; substantially as described.
