prevent the entrance of rain.
Be it known that I, R. S. GRUMMON, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Top Prop for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad-twthc accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of this invention.

This invention relates to a top prop which is composed of a socket whichrises from a suitable bracket, and whichis'fm'medto receive a bolt or screw in such a manner that the end of the socket forms a shoulder for the jointbars to bear against, and a top propis obtained which is durable, easily made, and readily kept in order. A thiznble fitted over the socket, and held down by the action of the bolt or screw, serves to clamp the leather covering betweenits inner edge and the bracket so as to hold said leather securely in position, andefi'ectually A represents the bracket, which is cast solid with the socket B. This socket is bored out and tapped to receive the screw C, or, instead of this, it may be formed from the inside so thata suitable bolt inserted in it is prevented from slipping through, and the bolt may be provided with a nut. The bolt or screw 0 forms the bearing for the joint bars, which are confined between the outer edge of the'socket and the head of the screw. The head of the bolt 0 is fast thereto, and is formed and ornamented in the manner .of whatever capped nuts may be in use, thereby obviating the common nuisance of a nut jarring loose. On the outside of the socket is fitted a thimble, D, which is pressed dQWIiagainstthe bracket by the screw or nut, and which serves to clamp the leather covering between its inner edge and the bracket. By this arrangement the leather covering is held firmly in position, and the joint between the covering and bracket is rendered water-tight, thus preventing the rain from finding its way to the interior of the carriage, and a top prop is obtained which is durable, easily made, and
readily put in position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'' The solid-headed screwfi, when used in combination with the socket B and thimble D, constructed and operated substantially as described for the purpose specified.
