SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 639,918, dated. December 26, 1899.
Original application led December 16, 1897, Serial No. 662,106. Divided andthis application filed December 10,1898. Serial No. 698,845. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE BROOKER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Bootle, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Door- Latches, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This is a divisional application based on an application, Serial No. 662,106, filed December 16, 1897, and relates to fastening devices or latches for doors, gates, and the like; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive and which may be operated from either side of the door or gate; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention isfully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-*- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a part of a door, showing myimproved fastening device or latch; Fig. 2, a back view thereof, showing a part of a door-frame provided with a catchplate or hook; and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of a door or gate, and in practice I secure to said door in horizontal line two plates 6, having outwardlydirected yoke-shaped brackets 7, the bottoms of which are curved upwardly and inwardly, as shown at 8, forming downwardly-directed loops 9.
The latch which I employ consists of a plate or bar formed into a central horizontal portion 10, provided with backwardly-directed angular extensions 11, one of which is provided with a supplemental extension 12, which projects parallel with the central handle portion 5o 10 and which rests in the loop 9 of one of the extension 11 is provided with a supplemental extension 13, which also projects parallel with the central handle portion 10 and which rest-s in the loop 9 of the other bracket 7 and which is provided with an arm 14, which projects at right angles to the central handle portion 10 and transversely of the free edge of the door or gate, through a notch or recess 15 formed therein. The end of the arm 14 is provided with a head 16, which is adapted to engage with a catch-plate or similar device secured to the door-jamb or gate-post on the 'side opposite the side of the door or gate to which the plate G is secured, said door-frame or post and said catch-plate being shown in Fig. 2 and hereinafter described.
The central handle portion 10 of the latch may be turned backwardly and forwardly when desired, and the notch or recess 15 in the edge of the door is wider at the outer than at the inner side, and the head 16 of the arm 14 is provided with an outwardly-curved portion 17, by means of which the latch may be operated from the inner side of a door or gate. It will thus be seen -that the latch may be operated from either side of the door or gate,
and the head 16 of the arm 14 may be so formed as to permit of its passing the door-frame o r gate-post when the door or gate opens out- Wardly instead of inwardly. I have also shown Y at 18 a part of a door-frame or gate-post provided with a catch-plate 19, having a downwardly-directed hook-shaped portion 20, which is adapted to engage the head 16 of the arin 14.
When, however, my improved latch is applied to a car or other vehicle, the above-deA scribed position of the parts will be reversed and the handle-bar 10 will be placed on the outer side and the head portion 16 will project inwardly and be operated from the inner' ICO brackets with an outwardly-directed angular portion by which it is retained in proper relative position with relation to said brackets, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 29th day of November, 1898.
WILLIAM BRAIN BRIDGE BROOKER.
