E. LAIVRENGE TEVIS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
l Laws Patent No. 63,962, ma Api-z 16, 1867, i
IMPROVED HINGE EUR SHUTTERS.-
TO ALL WHOM IT MAI.T CONCERN:
Be it-known that I, E. LAWREXCE TEVIS, of' the city of Philadelphia, in the county ofPhiladelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful improvemcntin Hinges for Shutters, Doors., clf' and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the three parts which compose my new hinge.
Figure 2 shows my hinge as when the shutter is shut.
Figure 3 shows my new hinge when the shutter is open.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a hinge by means of which a shutter or door can remain open without the help of any additional fixture, and be easily shut at any time.
lIn order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention', I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A and B, tig. l, are the side-plates of my hinge. A sets ou B in the usual way, viz, byinserting male m into female it, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. The female 'n in plate A is shaped so as to tit on m of plate B, but a lug, o, is added, and runs parallel to side A. Said lug is to receive the pin which holds in proper place the thumb-catch c. The knuckle on plate B is provided with a cam, D, protruding progressively, and so that its inuer face be plane and 4perpendicular to side-plate B, (figs. l, 2, and A catch, c, shaped as shown in c, (fig. 1,) is set ou side-plate A, between plate A4 and lug o, byl means of pin P, (figs. 2 and 3,) and thus completed, side-plate A being set on plate B, the hinge is now ready for use. Applied to a window shutter, for instance, by means of the ordinary screws, so that plate B sets on window frame and plate A on outside of shutter, the flat inside face of cam will thus be parallel to the outside wall, and if one pushes the shutter open, catch c, following the rotary movement of the plate it is attached to,` will go round knuckle B M, until, reaching point of cam D, it (the catch) by its own weight wilkfall into the -recess between wall and cam, and thus secure the shutter against any reactive motion from Wind or want of hanging true. To close the said shutter, all that one has to do is to press down on head of catch' c, so as to make its lower end clear point of cam D, and the shutter will close. My self-catching hinge can advantageously be applied to doors, and generally any kind of shutter, lill, box cover, 85o., Ste., revolving or hanging on hinges, and which it might be desirable to render self-catching in an open position. It is also evident that the position of the inside face of cam D will determine the angle under which the catch will operate, and that it may be, at will, made so as to allow the shutter, or whatever kind of lid the hinge is applied to, to open according to a certain angle. I` therefore do not limit myself to applying my self-catching hinge to window shutters only', but do intend usingl it in any way it may be found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United A self-catchinghinge provided with cam D, lug o, pin P, and catch the whole combined and constructed.
'1n the manner and for the purpose above described and set forth.
