ALMON G. ROBINSON, OF LOUISIANA, MISSOURI. Letters Patent No. 63,941,dated,11pril 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT I N GORN-HUSKING" SHIELD.
'(Elgi rlgct1rle infarct in in tlgcsc itetters new amt mating part at flgi time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY ooncnnn:
Be it known that I, ALMON O. ROBINSON, of Louisiana, in the county of Pike, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Corn-Husking Shield; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side perspective view of my improved corn-husking shield.
Figure 2 is'a front end perspective view.
Figure 3 is a view of the corn-husker on the hand for use.
Figure 4 is a pattern of the sheet metal to be formed into a shield, by bending.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a metal shield to be worn on either thumb for protection of he hand against the rough cutting surfaces of corn husks when they are stripped from the ear, and to expedite the work of corn husking by the more efi'ective operation of the instrument than that of the naked hand.
By suitable dies a thin sheet of brass or other suitable metal is cut into shape for bending into the proper form to adapt the shield to the shape of the thumb, over which it slips like an open thimble, as shown in fig. 3. The shield is made to fit either the left or right hand by bending the pattern one way or the other, and is made of various sizes.
The narrow projection a, fig. 4, is bent around to form a band, which encircles 'the thumb, so that when it is worn the right wing 11 shall lie snugly in the hollow behind and between the thumb and fore-finger on the outside as seen in fig. 3, and the left wing c-shall lie close under thethumh on the inside, coveringthe ball and extending to the palm of the hand. Both wings are curved at the edges to fit the shape of the parts they lie against in such manner that they will not slip around when the shield is used, but act as braces to hold it firmly in place on the thumb. The projection dis bent around to point towards the inside of the hand and pierce the husk of an ear of corn when it is seized for husking. For this purpose the hand with the shield on grasps the ear of corn in the usual way, when the projection d enters the husk near the base and holds it firmly, while with the'other hand the ear itself is \vrenched or broken out of the husk easily, and thus at the same time the shield completely protects those parts of the hand which are exposed to the wear of the harsh surfaces of the .husk,
especially the inside of the thumb, and saves them from the injury produced by corn-husking with the naked hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A corn-bushing metal shield, to wear upon the thumb of either hand, constructed and operating substantiully as herein shown and described.
