TYPE SETTING APPARATUS.
(Application led Apr. 16, 1897.) (No Model.) 2 Shee'fs--Sheet 2x nrrn PATENT Einen,
-LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON AND ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOl/V,` OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO THE ALDEN TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-SETTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,244, dated December 19, 1.899.
Application iiled April 16, 1897. Serial No. 632 ,400. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that we, LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHN- sonT and ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of New York, (Brooklym) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Type-Setting Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiicatiomsufcient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
Our improvements relate to apparatus for forwarding types from the lower end of atypecontaining channel into position for removal to the compositors stick by hand and is adapted to effect the presentation of a single type or a plurality of types arranged to form a word or other prescribed combination of characters.
In its general arrangement and operation our present construction embodies the essential `features of prior applications for patents made by us as Serial No. 616,936, iiled December 24, 1896, and Serial No. 614,165, filed December 2, 1896, our present improvements being designed mainly to render the apparatus more accurate and delicate in operation.
A distinguishing feature of our present invention consists in providing the actuatinglever by which the type-forwarding mechanism is controlled with a gravity-latch for engagement with the pawl on the powerclutch, so arranged in conjunction with a stationary part of the frame that said gravitylatch is thrust forward at the proper time to encounter the outer end of the pawl and afford a comparatively broad bearing therefor and quickly withdrawing from contact vwith said pawl when the withdrawal of type previously forwarded releases the actuating-lever. Thus by augmenting the extent of contact between the said gravity-latch on the actuating-lever and the pawl on the powerclutch, at the same time quickening the time of release between said parts, we adapt the apparatus to the forwarding of single types of minimum thickness, the comparatively slight movement of the actuating-lever caused by the withdrawal of such narrow types being compensated for by the gravity-latch, so
that the operation of engaging and releasing the power or type-forwarding mechanism is rendered certain and uniform for all types or combinations thereof. l
Another feature of our present invention consists in elevating the forward end of the actuating-lever by depressing its rear end at the proper time by means of a controlling-arm engaging w-ith the upper side of the lever and having a motion parallel to and coincident with the type pusher, the parts being so timed that the gravity-latch is thrust into the path of the advancing end of the pawl of the clutch simultaneously with the raising of the type or finger-piece to confine the forwarded typesbetween itand the upper bearings; Incidentally in this connection ourinvent-ion includes the making of this controlling-arm adjustable both vertically and horizontally in the plane of the actuating-lever for the purpose of effecting an accurate adjustment of the parts with relation to each other, so that their operation will be delicate and sensitive to the removal of the thinnest types as well as to thicker types or word combinatious.
Still another improvement consists in the special arrangement of means for adjusting and controlling the type-finger on the forward end of the actuating-lever and in the form of the pivotally-suspended type-bearing above.
Our invention also includes a lateral support for the type-channels, said support being pivotally connected to channel-holder and confining the channel and supporting it laterally by spring-pressure or by a lockingscrew, if desired.
The invention also involves certain other Special features in the construction, arrange-` ment, and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the parts at rest. Fig. 2 is a similar View ofthe forward end of the apparatus, showing the type-finger adjusted for one type. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the reverse side of the device, the parts being at rest. Figs. 4t and 5 are respectively a side elevation and a top View of the pusher-slide and connections.
IOO
In the drawings, A represents the stationary frame of the apparatus, of which the table Ct is a part. This table d is formed with sockets ct' for the reception of the tenons 7L of the channel-holders H, as heretofore.
The type-containing channel C is formed at its lower end with .the horizon tal type-'supporting shoulders c on one side of the vertical slot c', made in the path of the pusherblade p, which path extends between said horizontal type-shoulder c and the opposed wall of the channel C.
The type-channel C is supported by and upon the slide S. This slide S fits in a vertical groove h', formed in the side of the holder H, and is made adjustable vertically by suitable means, as by the vertical set-screw s, engaging with afemale screw-thread formed in the lower part of the holder, as shown in the drawings, which construction is preferable in that the sides of the holder are left free and unobstructed, while the adjustment of the slide can be readily effected when the holder H is removed from the table d. It is to be understood that this adjustment of the slide S is for the purpose of regulating the position of the type-shoulder c upon the channel C with relation to the position of the pusher-blade p, the path of which is prescribed as in structures heretofore described by us. The channel is held in a vertical positionby the wall h3 of the holder upon one side and by the lateral arln W on the other. This arm is pi votally supported on the rear of the holder H and tends constantly to press against the side of the channel by reason of the action of the springw, which compensates for differences in the thickness of the channels which may be used in the holder H. The spring w may be of sufficient stiffness to maintain the channel steadily in position upon that side of the holder, or it may be supplemented by a set-screw w', by which the arm W/ may be positively held against the wall of the channel O.
The front guard h4 of the holder H is formed at its lower end with the pivoted upper heel g, which acts, in conjunction with the fingerpiece f below, to hold the advanced types until they are withdrawn by the compositor. This act of withdrawing the types releases the lever L, the rear arm of which, carrying the latch J, is heavier than the forward arm, carrying the linger-post O, so that the latch J instantly releases the pawl c and starts the type-forwarding mechanism.
P is the reciprocating pusher-slide,to which the pusher-blade p is attached. A rear extension p of this pusher-slide P carries the vertical rod V, the lateral arm t of which rests against and controls the inclination of the actuating-lever L. The rod V is held in a bracket B on the rear extension jp by a screw l), which admits of the vertical adjustment of said rod V, While the bracket B is itself adjustable horizontally upon the rear extension 19 by the screws Z9 Z1', so that the position of the lateral arm t' may be varied and regulated with relation to the plane of the actuating-lever, and especially with relation to the cam-surface Z on said lever.
The pusher-slide P is connected to the eccentric E by the pitmen F and eccentric-strap f. The eccentric E is loose upon the powershaft I, except when coupled thereto by the pawl e, which engages with any of the shoulders t' z' on said shaft when not held out of engagement therewith by the upper end of the gravity-latch J on the actuating-lever L. The shaft 'i is in constant rotation, so that directly the pawl e is released it encounters and engages with one of the shoulders t', and thereby carries the eccentric E around with the shaft until the pawl cis again released, which is at the end of a single rotation, provided a type has been forwarded between the upper heelguard g and the type-finger f, in which position the type holds the actuating-lever L in such relation to the stationary bar R that the gravity-latch J tilts backward, with its upper end in the path of the outer end of the pawl.
The protruding and retracting of the upper end of the gravity-latch J is effected by reason of the contact of its cam-surface j with the stationary bar R or equivalent, the lower end of said latch J being pivoted to the actuatinglever L in such position that said cam-surface is held by gravity in constant engagement with said stationary bar R.
The actuating-lever L is formed with a slot Z on its under side, so as to straddle the fulcrum K, this construction admitting of the convenient withdrawal of the lever or insertion in position without disturbing adjoining parts of the apparatus.
The type-Iingerfis mounted upon the upper end of a stud f', which is held adjustably in the pivoted post O by a set-screw o. A setscrew N on top of the lever is used in conjunction with the spring-bolt M, mounted upon the lower side of said lever, the set-screw N limiting the thrust ot' the spring-bolt M, so I as to relieve the type-finger f of undue frictional contactwith the front of the table a.
