ANDREAS LORENZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HARRY TOROHIANI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPARATUS FOR AGITATING YEAST.
srncIrIcA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,067, dated December 12, 1899'.
Application filed danuary 27, 1899- To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, ANDREAS LORENZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Agitating Yeast, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for agitating yeast; and the object of the same is to provide convenient and effective means for enabling the removal and replacement of the means for agitating the yeast and for closing the vessel during agitation and while it is subjected to the action of the air which is forced through it.
The invention consists of certain features 'of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved machine for agitating yeast. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the machine in position for transferring the agitated yeast to the wort to be fermented; and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a vessel of cylindrical, oval, or other shape, which is made of strong sheet metal and supported on suitable legs a. In the vessel A is fitted a frame B, which is provided with upright side barsand top and bottom cross-bars having neck and step bearings 19 b for two vertical shafts O, to which are applied radial agitator-blades C, the blades of one shaft alternatin g with those on the other shaft. The frame is of such diameter as to guide it into and fit snugly in the vessel. At the upper ends of the agitator-shafts O are arranged bevel gear-wheels d, which mesh with bevel gearwheels at on a horizontal driving-shaft D, that turns in bearings e 6, arranged on the crossbars B of the detachable frame B. To the outer end of the shaft D is applied a crank and fly wheel D for conveniently rotating the agitators. The detachable frame B is secured in the vessel A by means of screw-bolts a, which pass through the upper cross-bar B and the flange a at the top of the vessel.
Serial No. 703,543- (No model.)
At one side of the vesselA is supported in a suitable bracket f a three-way valve F, one port of which is connected with a com pressedair pipe F, through which air that has been preferably passed through a filter is supplied. The lower port of the three-way valve F is connected by a pipe G with an opening g and stop cock g at the bottom of the vessel A, so that the air can be forced through the body of the yeast while the same is agitated in the vessel. By supplying air while the body of yeast in the vessel is agitated the same is aerated, so that a very favorable influence is exerted on the yeast-cells and the same rendered healthy and better adapted for brewin g purposes. then the body of yeast which is to be mixed with wort has been agitated for some time, it is ready to be transferred from the agitatiug machine to the fermenting-tun. The top of the vessel is then closed by a cover composed of sections A A that are tightly fastened to the flanged upper edge a of the vessel A by means of bolts and nuts A and to the sides of the top cross-bar B at each side of its raised central portion or rib p by bolts and nuts 5 The cover A A is provided with a stop-cock h, which is connected by a pipe H with the upper port of the three-way valve F. The lower stop-cock g is then connected by a hose I, that is 0011- pled thereto, to the. fermentingtun, after which compressed air is admitted through the pipe H into the vessel A, so that the entire body of yeast is transferred by the pressure of the air to the wort to be fermented.
When the vessel requires cleaning, the cover is removed and also the frame B and parts supported thereby, such frame being lifted by a suitable hoisting apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In an apparatus for agitating yeast, the combination of a vessel, a rigid frame arranged in the vessel and provided with upright side bars and with upper and lower cross-bars, said upper cross-bar having a raised central portion or rib, rotary agitators mounted in bearings in said cross-bars, means for rigidly and detachably connecting the frame to the upper end of the vessel, a cover composed of sections, one arranged at each side of said upper cross-bar, with the said my invention I have signed my name in prescentral portion or rib between, and means for ence of two subscribing Witnesses. detachably connecting the sections of the a cover to said upper cross-bar, said cross-bar ANDREAS LORENZ 5 forming a part of the cover, substantially as Witnesses:
set forth. J AS. L. STANTON, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as H. TOROHIANI.
