Description
A. MUNTZENBERGER.
Barrel-Washers.
No.145,003. v Patentd Nov. 25,1873.
WPFNEEEEEI INVENTUH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH MUNTZENBERGER, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,003, dated November 25, 1873; application filed June 26, 11573.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH MUNTZENBER- GER, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Washers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which is shown a perspective view of my improved apparatus as in use.
In breweries and other places where many casks and barrels are employed, it is a source of considerable trouble and annoyance to cleanse said articles after having been emptied so as to fit them for refilling. To render this operation more easy and thorough is the design of my invention, which consists in a rack or frame for containing casks or barrels suitably suspended and arranged to have a reciprocating motion, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent two rails arranged in parallel lines, and connected together at their ends by means of two cross-bars, B and B, as shown. \Vithin the upper edges of the rails A and A are provided coincident semicircular depressions a and a, which, in size, correspond to the ends of a barrel, O, and enable a number of the same to be placed transversely across the frame or rack, where they are securely held in position. The rack thus constructed is suspended from and between four standards, D and D, by means of four bars, E and E, one of which latter is pivoted at one end to each end and lower side of said rack, and, at its opposite upper end, to or upon the corresponding end of one of the standards, the arrangement being such as to enable said rack to swing longitudinally upon its said pivotal bearings. For convenience,
the standards D and D are secured upon and extend upward from a rectangular frame, F, which is supported upon and by means of four legs, G and Gr. Motion is imparted to the rack by means of a shaft, H, which is suitably journaled upon one end of the supporting frame F, and is provided with a crank, h, that is connected with the end of said rack by means of a bar, I, which extends between and is pivoted to or upon said parts. A flywheel, K, attached to one end of said shaft, and provided with a crankhandle, k, enables the same to be revolved at will.
The operation of the device is as follows: Anumber of barrels are placed in position upon the rack, partially filled with water, and said rack caused to swing to and fro upon its bearings, so as to thoroughly agitate said water, and cause it to be thrown around the entire inner surface of each barrel until the latter is entirely cleansed from all impurities, after which, by removing the bangs and turning said barrels to a suitable position, said water will be discharged, such operation being easily and quickly performed.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new The hereinbefore-described device for washin g barrels, consisting of a rack suspended so as to swing longitudinally, and suitable mechanism for causing said rack to reciprocate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1873.
ADOLPH MUNTZENBERGER.
