FOLDING BROQDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,055, dated December 12, 1899. Application tiled September 13, 1899. Serial No. 730,316. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MANANDER Mor'r JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Centre, inthe county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Breeders; and I do declare the following te be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a folding broeder; and the object is te provide a suitable device for protecting the young chicks until they are large enough to take care of themselves and te give them the necessary Warmth and protection coupled with'proper exercise to promete their health and insure their natural growth without the aid or assistance of a mother hen.
To this end my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the broeder, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved folding broeder as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the broeder in position for cleaning. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the broeder. Fig. 4. is a top plan view. Fig. 5 shows the broeder packed for transportation.
l denotes a rectangular broeder-box provided with a hinged cover 2, te the under side of which is fixed a Water-tank 3. The front. of the broeder is provided With a hinged inclined door 4 and a glass panel 5.
6 denotes the fence, which is pivoted te the side Walls of the broeder by the bolts 7 7.
8 denotes a right-angular door hinged to the rear end of the breeder, and 9 denotes the lamp, by means of which the broeder is heated through the medium of the hot-water tank.
10 denotes a fringed curtain Which divides the broeder into two sections-a Warm and a cool chamber.
In the circle in the corner of the broederbex where the lamp is placed is a sheet-metal sheathing to protect the broeder from fire from the lamp.
Among the many advantages possessed by my improved broeder is that it sets flat on the floor or ground and the chicks run in and out Without having to learn to climb a running-board. Another advantage is that the yard or fence folds back over the broeder and forms a erating for transportation or storage when not in use.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the ferm, proportion, and the miner details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isM I A broeder comprising a broeder-box having an inclined end, a window fixed in said inclined end and a door hinged to said end benea'th said window, a hinged horizontal cover, a water-tank xed to said hinged cover, a vertical opening in the opposite end of said breeder-box, and a right-angular door hinged to the box and adapted to close said opening; in combination with a rectangular fence or yard pivoted to the inclined end ef said broeder-bex and adapted to be folded back when not in use to encompass said box proper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MANANDER MOT'I JOHNSON.
