Be it known that I, R. J. P. GO0DWLN, M. D., ot Manchester7 county of Hillsboro, and Stateof New Hampshire, have invented an ImprovedStrainer; andl do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection n'ith v the drawings which accompanyl and form part of this specification, .is a description of my invention suilicient-to enable those skilledin the art to practise it. y
My invention consists in making a strainer yvith a langeturned on a wire cloth, and in clamping 'said ange between tivo rings of sheet metal by means of a hem on one of Vthe rihgs encompassing the edge of' the othirng,
which is grasped and held bythe hem, said construction enabling me to dispense with the use of solder in the manufacture of strainers. Y
- In the drawings, the View marked A shows one of my improved strainers in plan,`while that marked B shows it in side' elevation; thc view marked C showing the sajdstrainer in sectional elevation `and illustrating the mode of construction without solder before alluded to. The prime object-of this inventioais to supply the Werke.:
others similar thereunto, 4over outlets therein, through which the currents are generally both ctlluent and retluczit. The strainer is tobe so applied as to project into the vessel withwhich it is connected, where it is evident that the large area of straining'surface will be kept cleansed from deposit, if, as in ordinary coffee, ten., and water-pots, there is a cfluent current through the strainer. In thcvvicw marked C, the flangeturned or made on the wireclotb. strainer is shown as between the rings a and b, the ring a having a hem at its cuter, edge, which 'turns Vover and ras s the outer ed e of themrin b, thus clam infr the wire cloth between the tivo rincrs'and renderin E P, g g P e a g the use of solder unnecessary, this construction being` reliable, and preserving the integrity of the strainer under exposure to dry heat. .The strainer may be secured by its lange in any vessel by solder, by rivets, .or by slip-` ping its lnnge under suitable ledges fastened around' the outlet on the inner side of a vessel, in which latter case the strainer maybe readily removed to be cleansed or dried if needed, or to have' o ,ther strainers of ditterent degrees of coarsencss'or neness substituted to suit varying circumstances. r
I am aware ofthe construction ofthe Sherwood strainer, patented November 13, 1862, in which, by means of a handle up'on one side, and a. knob upon the other, the strainer may be suspended over and 'so as to project .into themouth of a coffee-pot, tea-urn, or other vessel. My invention differs from such Sherwood construction in that the strainer sprovided with a' curved ange made to fitthe.interior surface of the coffee-pot or other vessel, around the, oritice leading from the vessel to the spout. l
l claim a strainer constructed with a flange formed as described and shown in view4 C. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of A pril, A. D. 1866.
