To aZZ whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, JULIUS W. KNOPP, of Toledo, county of Lucas, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turn-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to a turn-table, and is adapted to provide means for quickly and easily transferring a loaded car from the main line to side tracks radiating .therefrom in either direction.
My invention especially relates to a turntable adapted to be used in asystem of tracks for stoneyards, foundry purposes, stonequarries, and the like. The nature of the labor carried on in the aforegoing being such as to produce a waste of material lying around indiscriminately along the track would handi cap or prevent the operative workings of a turn-table constructed in the ordinary manner, and therefore I have provided a turn-table of simple and inexpensive construction having all the working portions housed within, and thereby preventing any waste material, such as spalls and the like, to interfere with the turning of the table by dropping upon or along the circular track upon which the table rotates.
A further object is to provide a base integral with the circular track, upon which branch tracks from the main line may be secured, and provide stops integral with the base, whereby the rotative movement of the table may be limited to coincide with the main track or side tracks.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a turn-table constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the circular track of the turntable and the base integral therewith. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line X X, Fig. 1.
In carrying out myinvention, 1 designates a circular track having integral therewith a plurality of bosses 2, projecting radially outward from the circular track 1, two of the bosses be ing in parallel relation. The bosses are connected to the circular track by means of an outwardly-projecting web 3, whereby the circu lar track 1 is stiffened to prevent deflection and buckling underload. The aforedescribed base rests, preferably, upon a stone flagging 4:, but may also rest upon wood sleepers.
5 designates a rotatable plate having the central portion removed and upon which is secured the railway-tracks 6. In order to secure the rotatable horizontal plate upon the circular track 1, I have provided a pendent flange 7, integral with the horizontal plate 5 and concentric with the circular track 1. I may also provide a concentric flange 8,,integral with the horizontal plate 5, upon the inner side of the circular track 1, and by these means hold the rotatable plate in position upon the circular track 1.
I have found in practice that a track and rotatable plate constructed with the aforegoing can be rotated easily without any other means of bearing. However, I wish it to be understood that I may enlarge the concentric flanges pendently from and integral'with the rotatable plate and introduce balls 9 between the circular track 1 and the rotatable plate 5.
The stationary tracks 10 are secured to the bosses 2 by means of bolts 11, inserted through coincident orifices 12 in the boss and the base 13 of the track. The abutting ends 14 of the revoluble-track portion to the stationarytrack portion are cut to coincide with the circle described by the revoluble track. tracks 6, secured upon the revoluble plate, overlap the periphery of the plate and are adapted to rest upon asection 15 of the bosses 2, which are crowned, as shown at 16, to limit the movement of the rotatable-track portion and provide a guide, whereby the rotatabletrack portion is brought into coincidence with the main track or radial side tracks. Ihave provided outwardly-projecting lugs 17 integral with the crowned portion 15 of the bosses 2.
In the use of my turn-table a plurality of tables may be secured in the main line, and branch tracks may radiate therefrom to either outlying section in the quarry, mine, stoneyard, or foundry, &c., and a car being run The upon the main line may be quickly and easily transferred to any of the side tracks, or vice versa.
Spalls or waste material cannot accidentally lodge in the working and bearing portions of the track, as the latteris protected by the rotatable top plate overlapping the circular track. I may also provide a rotatable disk and secure a track-section thereon, as may be desired;
What I claim is- In a turn-table, a circular track, a plurality of bosses integral, and connected to the circular track by a radial Web, each two of the bosses being in parallel relation, and adapted to support a plurality of tracks secured thereto, a crowned portion formed upon the bosses adapted to support the overlapping ends of a track-section secured upon a disk supported upon the circular track, and held in position by a plurality of concentric flanges integral With the disk and pendent therefrom, and lugs secured to the bosses adapted to limit the movement of the rotatable-track portion, whereby the rotatable track and the stationary tracks are brought in coincident parallel relation. 7
