BALL -BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,222, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed May 14, 1896. Serial No, 591,568. lNo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ WILHELM EN- GELS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Ball-Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ball-bearings for cycles and for other purposes, the object be- IO ing to secure the cone or cup after adjustment.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and i5 partly in longitudinal section, showing one construction of the ball-bearing; and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of detached portions thereof.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide the adjustment-cone A, which I prefer to form as a cup screwing into the end of the hub, barrel, or equivalent B, with projecting teeth or equivalent A, Fig. 2, with which engage jaws or equivalent locking devices 0, formed upon a clutch-ring O, adapted to fit upon the outer end of the cone or cup A or in proximity thereto. The
0 ring 0 is provided with lugs or equivalent G which at their outer parts engage in an annular groove D, formed in the interior of a nut or cap D. This nut D screws onto the end of the barrel B, which may be tapered,
and, as shown at B, Fig. 2, split, so that as the nut D is screwed home the end of the barrel will grip the cup A, which is inside it. The barrel, besides being split, as at B, is provided with one or more recesses B for receiving the inner parts of the lugs 0 so that the clutch-rip g C is thus prevented from turning independently of the barrel B, and consequently when the locking devices G en gage the teeth A of the cup A the latter is positively locked to the barrel B independently of any gripping action to which it is subj ected when the nut D is screwed home, either by the compression of the slit barrel end or the pressure of the clutch-ring 0 upon the cup A.
To fit the clutch-ring O to the nut D-that is to say, to enable the lugs O to be engaged with the groove D--I prefer to split the clutch-ring, as at 0 Fig. 3, so that it may be bent or sprung inward while the lugs O are being brought opposite the groove D and so that when it is released it will spring outward to its normal size and cause the lugs O to enter the groove D, or this may be effected by initially bending thelugs O inward and afterward bending them outward when they are opposite the groove D.
The before-described means of securing the adjustment cone or cup A is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 applied to the hub of the driving-wheel of a safety-bicycle; but it may be applied to various bearings, including the pedals, and may be used at one or both ends of each such bearings. The nut D may be either milled, as shown in the drawings, or provided with slots or one or more holes for a thin spanner or other means by which it may be conveniently turned.
' The adjustment of the before-described device is a very simple operation and is effected 7 5 in the following manner, viz: The nut D is unscrewed from the hub or barrel B sufficiently far to release the teeth or looking devices C of the clutch-ring G from the teeth A of the cup A, the clutch-ring C during this operation being prevented from rotating with the nut by reason of the engagement of the lugs C with the recesses 13*. By a suitable spanner or tool the cup is then turned in the desired direction to tighten or loosen the balls F against the collar G of the .spindle G and to such an extent that the locking devices 0 can readily engage with the teeth A, after which the nut D is tightened and the whole made secure.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- In a ball-bearing, the combination with the barrel, a spindle therein, a collar on the spindle, a cup screwed into the barrel, and balls between the collar and cup, of recesses in the cup and barrel, a clutch-rin g with projections and a grooved nut on the barrel, the projections of the clutch-ring engaging with the recesses in the cup and barrel and groove of [00 the nut substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
FRITZ VVILHELM ENGELS.
