To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENocH JOHN WEST, cycle manufacturer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Foleshill, near Coventry, in the county of Warwick,
England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball-Bearin gs for Cycles and other Vehicles, (in'respect whereof I have obtained French Letters Patent, No. 261,614,
1o dated November 25, 1896,) of which the follo-wing is a specication.
This invention relates to ball-bearings for cycles and other vehicles and will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hub of a driving-wheel constructed according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a corresponding right-hand end elevation. Fig. 3 is a longizo tudinal section showing the hub-shell, the
iixed cup, the adjustable cup, and the split locking-ring, the cones and the spindle to which they are fixed being in side elevation. Fig. el is a side elevation of the adjustable z5 cup. Fig. 5 is a left-hand end elevation of the adjustable cup. Fig. 6 is a sidepelevation of the split locking-ring. Fig. 7 is a left-hand end elevation of the split locking-ring.
Cup-adj usting ball-bearings for cycles usually have one cup rrnly screwed home, and
this cup is not touched for purposes of adjustment. The other cup is screwed up to the 'requisite extent and is then held by a locknut or other device. -With a lock-nut two 3 5 spanners are employed, one for adjusting the cup and holding'it after adjustment and the other for tighten ing the lock-nut. The other devices, which can be tightened without displacing the adjusted cup, are complicated 4o and expensive to manufacture.
My present invention consists of means for locking the adjusted cup,` my object being to simplify the construction, to facilitate adjustment, and to produce a sure mode of con- 4 5 centric locking.

Instead of the part b and the cup C having 'right-hand threads and the part b' and the ring D left-hand threads the part o and the cup O may have left-hand threads and the part b and the ring D right-hand threads.
The ,back of the cup C has a cone c and ilats c and c2. The inside d of the split ring D is conical, (corresponding with the cone c on the adjustable cup O',) and outside the ring there are holes d and d2.
' In order to adjust the bearing, the split ring D is unscrewed by a spanner having pins which engage with the holes d and d2. The jaws of the Spanner are then applied to the flats c and c2 and the cup C is screwed upto the requisite extent. The pins are then again inserted in the holes d and d2 and the locking-ring D is screwed home, the conical part d engaging with the cone c and gripping it tightly. The tighter the cone c and conical part d are forced together the more the ring D will try to expand, and Will consequently firmly grip the thread in the part o of the The tightening of the locking-ring D does not disturb the adjustment of the cup C', asthe ring and cup have opposite threads.
The drawings show va driving-Wheel hub, but the invention may be applied to a frontwheel hub or to the bearings of the pedalshaft or to pedal-bearings, as will be readily understood.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. In a ball-bearing, the combination, with the shell of the bearing andan adjustable cup screwed in said shell and having a cone at the back thereof, of a split ring having a conical inside and screwed in the said shell, substantially as and for the`purpose set forth.
- 2. In a ball-bearing, the combination, with the shell of the bearing and cones a and o. iiXed on a spindle or shaft, of a cup C iix'ed in said shell, an adjustable cup C screwed in the said shell and having a cone c on the back thereof, and a ring D having a conical inside d and screwed in the aforesaid shell, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
