sEcI'FIoATIoN formingpart of Letters Patent No. 638,166, dated November as, 1899. Application niet septeiterza, 189s. serialNo. 6925099. diamond.)
To all whom t may oon/cern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BEEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to bins for holding merchandise, such as coffee and other cereals, the object of the invention being to provide a means whereby the merchandise may be maintained within the bin at a point near its upper end,so as to be within convenient reach to be readily dished from the bin.
To this end my invention consists in a iiexible bag suspended within the bin proper, and a roller and straps, arranged as hereinafter set forth, for elevating the lower portion of said bag, so as to raise the contents therein.
My invention further consists in features of novelty which will be hereinafter fully described.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved bin with the door thereof elevated and portions of the bin-walls shown broken away. Fig. II is a vertical transverse section of the bin with the door closed and the bag in its lowermost position. Fig. III is an enlarged vertical transverse section of the upper portion of the bin, showing the bag elevated therein. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail view of the gripping-handle by which the reel-roller of the bag-elevating means is operated.
1 designates the bin proper, which may be l of common form, such as is at present used for holding merchandise in grocery stores. The bin is closed by a door composed of two sections 2 and 3. The door-section 2 is connected to the rear wall of the bin by hinges 4, and this section is adapted to be held to the bin by catches 5, located on the interior of the bin. The door-section 3 is connected to the section 2 by hinges 6. It will therefore be seen that the door-section 2 may be held securely closed by the catches 5, while access is permitted to the interior of the bin on opening the door-section 3, which is the only part of the door there is any necessity of opening when merchandise is being removed from the bin. When, however, the operating mechanism, to be described, is to be manipulated, the catches 5 may be disengaged and the entire door may be opened, as shown in Fig. I.
7 is a liexible bag suspended within the bin proper and secured to the bin only at its upper edges.
S designatesa roller the ends of which are journaled in the side walls of the bin 1, and 9 are straps connected to the front upperportion of the bag 7 or to the front Wall of the bin. These straps 9 pass through stay-strips 10, down the front, across the bottom, and up the rear of the bag 7. The straps are connected to the roller 8 and are designed to be wound thereon to draw the bag upward for the purpose of raising the contents of such bag as the merchandise is removed therefrom in order that the contents of the bag may be maintained near the upper end of the bin, Within convenient reach. The roller 8 is operated by means of a gripping-handle 11, that is provided with a spring-strap 12, that encircles the roller and is caused to grip the roller on a pressure in one direction, while a movement of the handle in the opposite direction loosens the gripping-strap, permitting the handle to be thrown back to take another grip upon theroller. Retrograde movement of the roller 8 is prevented by a pawl l3-engaging ratchet-teeth 8a on the roller.
111 is a partition located beneath the roller 8 and adapted to prevent the contents of the bin from falling behind the rear portion of the bag 7 and dropping to the bottom of the bin outside the bag.
l5 designates a strip located in the lower front corner of the bag 7, which is adapted to hold the bag straight at this corner, and also to serve as a stop to prevent the bag from being drawn up behind the partition 14 and becoming caught between such partition and the rear wall of the bin.
In the use of my improved bin the merchandise is placed therein with the bag suspended in full, as shown in Fig. Il. When the merchandise becomes lower in the bin byV the extraction of the contents, the catches 5 are released and the entire door 2 o is elevated, thereby permitting of the grippinghandle 11 being reached and manipulated to IOO Wind the straps 9 onto the roller 8. When by such manipulation of the handle 411 the bag has been raised sufeiently to bring the bin contents into convenient reach, the door is again closed and the section 2 is held closed by the catches 5 until such time as it may be again desirable to elevate the contents of the bin, owing to their becoming so loW as to be inconvenient to reach.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a bin, the combination of the bin proper, a bag suspended in said bin proper, straps extending around the depending portion of Said bag, and a roller on which said CHARLES W. BEEHLER.
In presence of E. S. KNIGHT, N. V. ALEXANDER.
