ISAAC E. REIS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADVANCE WATER HEATER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BURNER FOR WATER-HEATERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,143, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed December 22, 1898. Serial No. 700,020. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. REIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Water-Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My inventi'on relates to an improved burner for use in apparatus for heating water by the use of gas or other vapor.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I isa vertical section of my improved heater, taken on the line I I, Fig. II. Fig. II is a horizontal section taken on the line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a top or plan view of the burner, showing the base of a stove and parts of water-heater pipes. Fig. IV is a transverse sectional view of the burner. Fig. V is a similar view to Fig. IV, this View showing part of of the casing or housing of the burner and parts of water-heating pipes. Fig. VI is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the burner, taken on line VI VI, Fig. V.
1 represents the burner of the heater, which is made in the form of an outside surrounding tube or pipe, preferably of rectangular form, as shown in Fig. III, and cross tubes or pipes 2, that connect the sides of the surrounding tube together. The lower halves of all of the tubes are preferably made in one casting and the upper halves of all of the tubes in another casting, the two parts being fitted together, as shown in Fig. IV, the surrounding tube having flanges 3, secured together by screws 4 or otherwise, by which the two castings are united. The flange forms the base of the stove and rests upon supportinglegs.
'The upper half of the flange 3 is provided with an upturned edge 6 at its corners to receive an outside casing or jacket 7 of the heater. The upper half of the tubes or pipes of the burner are provided with slots or slits, as shown, for the escape of gas, which enters through a supply-pipe 8 and a mixing-chamber 9 of usual construction, where it is mixed with oxygen.
Within the outer casing 7 is an inner casing 10, between which and the outer casing there is an air-chamber 11. The inner casing is elevated some distance above the burner and is preferably supported by standards 12, secured to the base of the burner. By making the burner in the form of two castings, each of which contains one-half of the tubes or pipes, it is cheaply produced and is of a durable character. The cross-tubes of the burner, with the exception of the second and third from each end, are separated by spaces 13 for the admission of air, the second and third tubes, respectively, from each end of the burner having no spaces between them, as shown at 14, Fig. VI, whereby the two castings of the burner are more firmly bound and held together.
15 represents aWater-supply pipe provided with a faucet 16, in which is a regulating plug or valve 17, so that when the faucet is opened the fiow of water can be regulated to a nicety by screwing the plug up or down. The supply-pipe communicates with a coil 18, located within the casing 10, and which is supported on cross-pieces 19, secured to the standards 12. The coil extends from the supply-pipe 15 upwardly into the casing 10, above the burner, and is then bent back and forth and descending joins at 2 with a discharge-pipe 23, either end of which may be used as an outlet, the other end being closed by a cap 24.
I do not herein claim the form of coils shown in connection with my improved burner, as the same forms the subject-matter of my application, Serial No. 709,708, filed March 20, 1899.
I claim as my invention- 1. A burner for substantially the purpose set forth consisting of a surrounding tube and cross connecting-tubes formed in castings secured together, part of said cross connectingtubes being separated and part being joined together, substantially as described.
2. A burner for water-heaters, consisting of a surrounding tube and cross connectingthe castings are secured together and which form a support for the Water-heater casing, 10 substantially as set forth.
ISAAC E. REIS.
In presence of E. S. KNIGHT, G. A. TAUBERSOHMIDT.
