Be it known that I, MEYER RosENBERc., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of rulers which are provided with inked marking- Wheels adapted to print lines on the surfaces over which they are caused to roll; and the object of myimprovemeut is to provide a device of this kind that will be efficient in operation, neat in appearance, and inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of same. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of the invention.

A represents a stem or handle having a reduced portion A at its lower end. Permanently secured to this portion is an ink-receptacle consisting of a tube B, having an -o eninfr B', through which the ink is inserted said opening extending through the wall of the tube and situated in the upper portion thereof. The lower end portion of this tube has a reduced threaded or corrugated portion B2, in which is adjustably secured a plug C, made of felt or some other absorbent material, said plug serving as an ink-pad for the marking-wheel hereinafter mentioned.

The purpose of having the reduced portion of the tube provided with threads is to permit the plug to be adjusted longitudinally by slightly turning the same and also to prevent the plug from being accidentally pushed back into the tube.

D is an outer tube slidably mounted on the inner tube B above referred to and extending beyond the lower end thereof. The lower end portion of the outer tube is split and terminates in two downwardly-directed tongues D'. Revolubly mounted between these tongues is an annular marking wheel or disk E, said wheel being normally in contact with the absorbent plug and is adapted to print lines on the surfaces over which it is rolled.

In order to prevent the outer tube from rotating, the same is provided at its upper portion with a slot F, adapted to engage a stud G, which is secured to the inner tube.

The object of the reduced portion of the inner tube is to expose a large surface of the plug to the ink, and thus cause the same to be quickly absorbed and transmitted to the lower contact-surface of the plug. In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 3 this is accomplished by reducing the upper portion of the plug. In this construction the ink is inserted at the top of the inner tube, the same being for that purpose removably secured to the handle by having interior screwthreads, which engage corresponding threads cut on the reduced portion of the handle.

In using the ruler the outer tube is removed, the plug properly adjusted, and the ink inserted through the exposed opening in the inner tube. The outer tube, with the markingwheel secured at its lower end,is then put back over the inner tube, care being taken that the slot on the upper end portion of the outer tube engages the stud projecting from the inner tube. The ruler is then ready for use. Byrolling the marking-wheel over the surface to be marked the wheel will print a solid sharp line, the periphery of the wheel being continually inked by the plug or pad. A plurality of lines may be drawn by mounting several wheels side by side between the tongues, these being for that purpose capable ofspreading apart. By using marking-wheels of different tbicknesses heavy or light lines may be drawn.

This ruler is designed for drawing marginal lines in blank books,billheads,&c. The simplicity of its construction and small requirements of care and adjustment render it particularly adapted for use in commercial offices.

Being aware that changes may be made in the construction herein shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the use of this particular combination of parts.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a ruler, the combination with a stem or handle, of an ink-receptacle comprising an inner tube secured to said handle, said tube being provided at its lower end with a reduced threaded portion, and an opening eX- IOO tending through the wall of the said tube in the upper portion thereof, au absorbent plug adj ustably secured in the red ueed portion of said tube, an outer tube slidably mounted on the inner tube, the lower end portion of said outer tube being split in two and terminating in two downwardly-directed tongues extending beyond the lower end of the inner tube, a marking-wheel revolubly mounted between the said tongues and normallyin Contact with the absorbent plug, and means for holding the outer tube against rotation, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
