UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER H. KOPETSOHNY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
PUZZLE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,804, dated November 28, 1899';
Application filed March 22, 1899. Serial No. 710,056. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. Ko- FETSCHNY, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
This invention relates to improvements in puzzles, and the object is to provide a puzzle of simple construction and of comparatively small cost, but which, however, will require a display ofconsiderable skill in its manipulation and solving.
I will describe a puzzle embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a puzzle embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig.1.
The puzzle comprises a number of blocks 1, which may be conveniently moved or transferred from place to place in a box 2, having a suitable cover 3. I have here shown sixteen blocks; but it is to be understood that there may be a greater or less number without do parting from the spirit of my invention, an even number, however,- being necessary.
On each block an article of food is illustrated, and also on each block is a word indicating a piece of table furniture-that is, blocks are arranged in sets of four. On each block of one set the word Knife appears, on each block of another set the word Plate appears, on each block of another set the word Fork appears, and on each block of another set the word Spoon appears. On four of the blocks eggs are illustrated, on each of another four a cut ham is illustrated, on each of another four a cut cheese is shown, and on each of another foura loaf of bread is illustrated. It will be noted that the sets of blocks bearing the same illustration of an article of food do not each bear the same word. For instance, one block showing eggs has the word Knife, another one showing eggs has the word Plate, the next one Fork, and the next one Spoon, and a similar order is carried out in all the sets.
In playing the puzzle after indiscriminately mixing or shuffling the blocks the ob ject is to so move orarrange them side by side that the four articles of tableware will appear to be named in each line both vertically and crosswise, and the four articles of food will appear in each line both vertically and crosswise, as plainly indicated in the drawings.
In mixing or shuffling the blocks they are of course to be removed from the box, and they may then be arranged in proper position by moving about on a table or the like, or they may be placed back in the box and moved about either by sliding when there is less than the whole number in the box, or they may be lifted from one place and inserted in another place.
Obviously this puzzle will not only require a considerable skill in its solution, but will be interesting and entertaining.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A puzzle, comprising a number of sets of blocks, which when placed together will form a square, each block of each set having the designation of an article of tableware, and each block of each set having the illustration of an article of food, the articles of tableware and articles of food being the same in each set, but the associated articles of food and articles of tableware varying on the individual blocks of each set so that when the blocks are properly arranged the several articles of tableware will appear in each line both vertically and crosswise, and the several articles of food will appear in each line, both vertically and crosswise.
ALEXANDER H. KOPETSOHNY.
