SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,527, dated October 24, 1899.

To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. BERNsrEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sterilizers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,
My invention consists of yan improved construction of sterilizer for hospitals and other purposes in which provision is made for the employment of an auxiliary boiler consisting of a series of headers and pipes in which steam and water contained therein are heated to a high degree in an exceedingly effective manner, the steam being discharged from said auxiliary boiler into the interior of the sterilizer upon the lower portion thereof.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the outer casing of the sterilizer, beneath which is located the gas-pipe B for heating purposes.
C designates the inner casing of the sterilizer, which is shaped in cross-section substantially as seen in Fig. 3, whereby the space D is formed, in which are located the headers E and F, the shape of which will be readily understood from Figs. l, 3, and 4, the lower header portion G, which joins the upwardlyextending header portions, having the double series or rows of water-tubes H, while the upwardly-extending header portions are joined by the water-tubes J.
K designates circulation pipes or connections, which are arranged in pairs substantially in the form of a semicircle and extend from the upper portion of each of the headers Serial No. 717,683. (No model.)
E and F toward each other, as will be understood from Fig. 3, the juxtaposed ends of said pipe being joined by couplings L,lwhere bya free circulation is permitted from the top portions of each pair of headers over the top of the inner casing C.
M designates longitudinally extending ridges located at the base portion N of the inner easing C, said ridges serving to support the cage P, of wire or similar material, the outer end of which is provided with a door Q, which is hinged, as at R, and is provided with any suitable locking device at the point S. The headers E and F, at or near the `upper portion, are each provided with a later ally-extending pipe vT and U, respectively, which are joined by means of the branch V, upon which is located the safety-valve W, the gage X, and the lling cup or device Y, which is provided with a valved pipe Z, communicating with said pipe V, whereby the auxiliary boiler can be filled, as will be explained.
A' designates a damper-regulator, which has the rod B' connected to a suitable portion thereof, the lower extremity of said rod communicating with the valve C', which controls the passage to the pipe B, whereby the How of fuel to said pipe can be regulated according to the increase or decrease of pressure in the pipe V and the regulator A'.
D' designates a valve which controls the flow of steam and water from the pipe T to the outlet-pipe G', which latterleads through a suitable support H' to the pipe J', which communicates with the head or chamber K', the latter being provided with a port L at its -lower portion, through which steam and boiling water are permitted to escape and are directed toward the lower portion or base N of the inner casing C, as will be understood from Fig. 5. The sterilizer can be supported in any suitable manner, and one end thereof is provided with adoor M', which can be held in locked position by any suitable means.
The operation is as follows: The sterilizer is filled by opening the valve in the pipe Z and also the valves D' and F', whereupon it will be seen that water poured into vthe cup Y can fiow through the pipes Z, V, T, and U .into the headers E and F, respectively, the desired height of the water being ascertained lOO from the gage E'. Upon heat being applied to the bottom of the sterilizer, the valve Z being closed, the hot water will circulate between the headers E and D through the pipes J and H, a further circulation taking place through the pipes K and V, as will be apparent. The valve F' being opened, the steam Will pass from the header E to the pipes G and J into the head K' and will be discharged therefrom toward the bottom of the inner casing C, as will be understood from Figs. 3 and 5.
The articles to be sterilized are placed in the cage P by opening the doors M and Q, whereby they are sterilized to the desired eX- tent through the medium of the steam impinging on the under side thereof and passing upwardly through the same, as will be understood from Fig. 5.
The water contained in the sterilizer can be readily withdrawn therefrom through the pipe or drip N'. The trap o1' chamber P communicates with the pipe G below the checkvalve R and is provided with a blow-off cock or outlet Q', the function of said trap being to arrest any water which might otherwise pass into the pipes G' and J.
IIaving thus described myinvention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sterilizer, an outer and an inner casing, a heating device for said outer casing, a water-circulating system situated between said casings, said system having headers or chambers situated at the ends of the casing and extending below and upwardly along the sides vof the inner casing, said headers or chambers being connected by pipes, and an outlet for said system communicating with the inner casing.
2. In a sterilizer, an outer and an inner casing, means for opening and closing an end of the inner casing, a heating device situated below the outer casing, and a water-circulating system situated between said casings, said water-circulating system comprising a water chamber 'or header at each end of said casing, communicating pipes extending longitudinally between said water chambers or headers, and communicating pipes extending transversely between the sides of said Water chambers or headers and over the inner casing, said headers communicating with an outlet leading to the interior of the inner casino.
3. In a sterilizer, an outer and an inner casing, means for opening and closing an end of the inner casing, a heating device situated below the outer casing, a watencircnlating system situated between said casings and communicating with an endof the inner casing, a head Within said inner casing situated over said outlet for detlecting the steam toward the bottom of said inner casing, and a removable cage situated within said inner casing and supported a little distance above the bottom thereof.
