JAMES A. HINSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,322, dated October 24, 1899. Application filed February 3, 1899. Serial No. 704,375. (N0 model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, J AMES A. HINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-.Blocks forRailway-Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates generally to railwaycars, and particularly to bnfling devices therefor; and it has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and effective bufting device and head-block adapted to relieve the cars of the injurious effects from the violent shocks to which they are subjected when in use; and it consists of the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan View of myinvention 5 Fig. 2, avertical transverse section on the line y y, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a vertical section on the line nox, Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a detail perspective View of the buffing-head.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout all the views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the end sill of a railway-car, and B a car-coupler of the .Ianney type. The couplermay be provided with any desired or preferred form of knuckle and locking device, and it may be connected with any preferred form of draftrigging and work equally well with my hereinafter-described buffing device. The drawhead, however, is cast or otherwise provided with a vertical flange d, adapted, when the' coupler is drawn back, to engage the buffmghead C, mounted in the head-block D. The head-block D is preferably formed of metal and secured to the end sill by means of bolts b and rests on and is secured to the draft-sills E by vertical bolts c, which also serve to secure the bar F and the strap-iron G, which carry the free end of the draw-bar, to the head-block and draft-sills. The strap-iron G is carried up and bolted to ears or lugs CZ, formed on the ends of the head-block. The
head-block I) is formed with the cylindrical pockets c to receive the boiling-springs H, against which the bufling-head C bears. The inner or adjacent walls f of the pockets e do not extend to the outer surface or face of the head-block, but terminate in rear of the same in order to provide the necessary space for the play of the bufling-head, the stein g of which enters the slot or opening n between said walls f and extends into a recess (shown in dotted lines, Fig. l) formed in the headblock, in which position it is secured by means of a bolt or pin L, inserted through an opening in the head-block and passing through an elongated opening h in the stem g of the buffing-head. The bolt or pin L is secured in position by means cf a key fi, passed through said pin or bolt. The bufng-head C lits easily at all points in the openings to the pockets e and engages the springs therein to relieve the car to which it is attached, as well as those which may be brought into violent contact with it, of the injurious effects of violent buing whether the cars operating against it be supplied with bufting devices or are not so supplied. The draft-sills E are shown as made of channel-iron and provided with a Wood lling; but the latter is not absolutely necessary and maybe left out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A head-block for railway-cars having adjacent pockets formed therein, springs arranged in`said pockets, and a buffing-head secured intermediate of said pockets in said 4head-block and' adapted to engage said springs.
2. A head-block for railway-cars having pockets formed therein and a slot or opening intermediate said pockets, springs arranged in said pockets, an elongated bufting-head having a central stem adapted for insertion in said slot, and means for limiting the movement of said bufling-head.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. HINSON.
