SINGLETREE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,952, dated October 17, 1899.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MooNE v, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Singletree Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to trace-holders, and has for its object to provide an attachment for a singletree end through the medium of which a trace end may be easily connected therewith and disconnected therefrom and which attachment will, moreover, prevent accidental displacement of the trace end.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure l is a perspective view showing a sin gletree end having my attachment thereon and a trace end connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail section on the plane of the inner face of the outermost bearing.

In operating in accordance with my invention I provide a plate a, having bearings b thereon in the form' of ears projecting upwardly from the face of the plate. A recess c is formed in the upper face of plate a between the ears b, and within this recess is secured at one end a spring d, which is flat and which projects slightly above the surface of the plate a, the recess Vc being suiiciently deep to allow depression of the spring thereinto.

Arranged intermediate the ears b is the enlarged base f of a hook or clip g, which hook extends beyond plate a. The base f of the hook is pivotally connected with the ears Z) through the medium of a pin h in such a position that when the hook is horizontally disposed one face of the base f will engage the spring d and will be held in position thereby. The rear under cornert'of the base f is rounded, as shown, to enable the pivotal movement of the hook, the spring being adapted to bear on the end of the base and hold the hook vertical when the hook is moved to that position. is then bent at right angles and terminates in a vertical plateV 7n, having a vertical slot Z therein, as shown.

In practice the plate d is secured to the upper surface of the singletree m through the medium of screws n or in any other desired manner, the adjustment of the plate being such that plate k will lie against the rear edge of the singletree and the tip of the hook g will engage the .upper surface thereof. It will be noted that the hook g is angular, although it will be readily understood that it may have anydesired shape, it being further noted that the tip thereof is extended below the body, so as to engage the surface of the singletree.

The trace that is to be used ln connection with my attachment is provided with a series of openings o to receive the end of the singletree, the length of the trace beingadjusted by means of these holes in a manner well known.

In the operation of my device the hook g is raised to a vertical position and the trace is slipped over the end of the singletree, said tree entering the proper opening in the trace. The hook is then lowered to inclose the trace, as shown, and the tip of the trace, which extends beyond the singletree, is bent to lie along the rear edge of the singletree and is passed through the openin g in plate 7s, so that it will not be in the way.

It will be readily understood that I may vary the specific construct-ion and arrangement herein shown and described and that I may use any desired material in the manufacture of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- The combination with a singletree of a plate fixed thereto, and having upwardly-directed and parallel ears, a recess in the plate between the ears, a spring-tongue lying across the recess and secured to the plate, a hook having a stem provided with an angular base pivoted to the ears and adapted for engagement with the spring to be held at different points of its adjustment, said stem being adapted to lie close to the singletree and having an upward arch at its free end adapted to engage the singletree at its outer extremn lOO .
