a citizen of the United States, residing at Allen, in the county of Washabaugh, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and My invention relates to cases for ink-wells,l and has for its object to provide a cheap and;

simple case to receive and hold the glassinkreceptacle used upon school-desks in connec-v tion with a metallic frame. Y

As is well known, the school-desk ink-well consists of a cylindrical glass vessel having an annular flange at its top. Th'isink vessel or receptacle fits into a metallic frame provided with a lid and which is secured upon a desk in such a position that the glassI portion tion formed in the topthereof. Through care'- 'lessnessin leaving the lids of the wells open when not in use much ink is wasted by evaporation, itv becomes thickened and must be rei' plenished, and, -m oreover, is a constant sourceI of temptation to the mischievous. NVith my invention after the using of ink is Iinishe'd for the day the glass receptacles "are raised from their frames in the desks and are placedv in the case. This case is formed adjustable, so as to be made to receive the ink-receptacles of uniform size, whatever such size may be, within certain limits. A cover is` formed for the case having variable connections with the case to fit upon the'whole group of receptacles and close vthem against'evaporation,

Secured to the front face of the case and coperating with plate y is a second plate b', having a vertical slot c', through which plate fg projects when the cover is in plate. Extending outwardly from plate b and in a position to lie parallel with plate y is a flange d', having vertically-alined perforations corresponding with those in theplate y. Fastened rigidly to the plate b is a spring-wire whose lower portion lies against the plate, after which it is bent outwardly and then inwardly and then is brought to lie against plate b in the plane of the lower portion, from which position it is bent laterally at right angles to form a straight portion adapted to enter alining perforations in plates y and h.

The wire e is preferably secured in place through the medium of a loop at its lower end, through which a screw f is passed into the case for holding plate h' in position. As shown, aplurality of screw-holes g are formed inplate b to allow manipulation of the Wire catch to engage different alining perforations. It will be noted that the Wire catch is substantially L-shaped, with a loop at its lower end and with an outward bend in its stem.'

In practice the plates n and s are adjusted to cause their cooperating square openings to iit snugly an ink-well, after which the we'lls areplaced in the several openings, it being readily understood that the case may be built to accommodate any number of Wells. The cover is then adjusted by inserting its pins in the proper perforations of the back straps, after which it is pressed down upon the tops of the wells to bring the plate y adjacent flange d', when the Wire catch may be readily manipulated to enter alining perforations in the plate and fiange to hold the cover tightly upon the wells. It is readily understood that the Wellsare each provided with an annular flange at their upper edges which prevent them being vforced through the openings in the supporting-plates n and S, while the pad within the case oliers a yieldable support for them.

One of the attaching-screws p is passed through a plurality of layers of felt, kid, or other suitable material, forming a pen-Wiper.

Thus it will be seen that With my apparatus the wells may be easily collected and at the same time the pens collected and that after the latter have been cleaned upon the wiper they may be deposited inthe receptacle i therefor. f In practice a scholars well is irst lifted from the desk and placed in the case. Then his pen is wiped and then placed in the receptacle therefor, the same being repeated at the desk of the next scholar. p

It will be readily understood that I may vary the specific construction and arrangement herein shown and described, that I may use whatever material in its manufacture that may appear advisable, and that I may vary the proportions at will Without departing in any manner from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim ijsy 1. The combination with a receptacle of a plate fixed thereto and having angular openings therein, and a second plate having also similar angular openings and adjustable over the iirst plate, the openings of one plate be ing arranged to aline with those of the other plate, and means for holding the plates upon the receptacle.

2. The combination with a receptacle of a plate fixed thereto and having square openings therein, asecond plate havin g also square openings and adjustable over the iirst plate, said openings of one plate being arranged to aline with those of the other plate and disposed with their diagonals in the line of adjustment of the adjustable plate.

3. The combination with a receptacle of a plate iixed thereto and having square open-l ings therein, a second plate having also square openings therein, the openings of one plate being adapted to aline with the corresponding openings of the other plate, the second plate being adapted for adjustment over the iirst plate, a yieldable pad beneath the plates, and a cover adjustable vertically with respect to the plates.

4. The combination with a receptacleof a plate fixed thereto and havingsquare openn` ings therein a second plate having also square openings therein adapted to aline with the corresponding openings of the iirst plate, said second plate being adjustable over the rst plate, perforated straps secured to the receptacle, a cover having pins adapted to enter certain of said perforations, a perforated plate carried by the cover, a corresponding perforated plate carried by the receptacle, and a latch adapted to enter alining perforations in the last-named plates.

5. The combination with a receptacle divided into compartments, of a' plate fixed and covering one of the compartments and having angular openings therein, a second plate adjustable over the irst plate and having angular openings adapted to register with the first-named openings, the openings in the plates being disposed with their diagonals in line with the adjustment of the plate, a pad beneath the openings, a padded cover having adjustable connection with the receptacle, and an absorptive pad within the second compartment. i
