Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC FRANK KNonnLocn, or DAYTON, oruo, ASSIGNOR TOTI-IE KIN ARD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or sAMn PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 634,645, dated October 10, 1899. Application filed February 18, 1899. derial No. 706,042- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
' Be it known that I, FRANK KNOBELOCH, a citizen of the UnitedSta tes, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in boxes or packages designed more particularly for shipping perishable articlessuch as lamp-chimneys, lamp-globes, lamps, &c.- which are now packed in straw or excelsior. To pack those articles in the usual way is expensive, is attended with much risk, and makes a heavy awkward package, whereas by means of my improvement they are packed for shipment with safety, eoono1ny, and in a light convenient package.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aplan view of the blank cut and scored in the proper manner. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box partially folded. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box completely folded. Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross-section of the box, showing a lampchimney in position.
The blank is cut from a rectangular piece of cardboard or other suitable material, the only waste being in thesmall portions cut out in forming the locks. Said blank is shown in Fig. 1 cut and scored in the proper manner. The scores a a a a and b I) determine the width and length, respectively, of the sides A A A A. The blank has on one sidea flap J, which is used in gluing the sides together.
' The sides are provided at each end with flaps B B O O and B B O C. These flaps are connected by the portions D D D and D D D, said portions being determined by the scores d dd, &c., d d d, &c. The scoresaaa are prolonged over this portion D, so that they may be folded upon themselves. The length of the scores 61 are determined by the distance on the diagonal between the corners of the box and the outer periphery of the lamp-chimney or other article to be shipped, as seen in Fig. 4. The flaps with slots g g and g g and the flaps CC and C C with the laterallyextending tongues B B and B B are provided E E E E and E EE E, adapted to fit within said slots.
I In folding the box the sides are folded at right angles along the scores a CL Ct at and the flap J is glued or otherwise fastened to the edge of the side A, as shown in Fig. 2. The portions D D D D are then folded upon themselves inwardly in a bellows fold along the scores a aa a. The flaps B B are folded along the scores Z) Z), the one flap upon the other, and then the flaps C O are folded along the scores 6 b, the two flaps O O overlapping each other by the width of the tongues E E. These tongues are then slipped into the slots 9! g, thus looking all the flaps together.
A piece of tin-or other thin material may be used to slip into the bellows folds and force them into a position at right angles to the top or bottom of the box, and thus insure their bearing against the chimney or other article to be shipped, as shown in Fig. 4:.
Instead of the flaps being connected by the bellows folds D these folds may be split along the score a, thus leaving the flaps separate, the object being simply to have a part that will fold bodily inward and brace against the article to be packed. The bellows fold, however, is the preferable form, as it makes a stider brace.
In packing the chimney one end of the box may be closed first, then the chimney put in from the other end and that end closed' Having thus described my invention, what I wish to claim by Letters Patent is- 1. A box for shipping fragile articles made from a blank having sides, and end 'flaps integral with said sides, said .fiaps being connected by bellows folds adapted to fold bodily inward and brace against the article to be packed, said flaps being locked in any convenient manner, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A box for shipping fragile articles made from a blank having sides and end flaps integral with said sides, said fiaps being provided with parts adapted to: fold bodily inward and brace against the article to be packed and hold it in position, said flaps being locked together in any convenient manner substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a box for shipping fragile articles flaps being connected by bellows folds adaptmade from a blank having sides and end flaps ed to support the article to be packed and two being connected by bellows folds, adapted to alternate flaps having slots and the other two fold bodily inward and brace against the arlaterally-extending tongues adapted to fit I5 5 ticle to be packed, two alternate flaps having Within said slots and thus lock the flaps toslots, and the other two laterally-extending I gether, substantially as described.
tongues adapted to fit Within said slots and T 7 thus lock the flap together, substantially as FRANK KL OBELOOH' and for the purpose described. Witnesses:
so 4-. A box made from a blank having sides GEORGE I'IEIDMAN,
and end flaps integral with said sides, said EDW, IIAAT.
