SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 634,584, dated october 1o, Iseo.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland,jcounty of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to male use, and practice the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a mangle in which hot Water can be used as the heating agent, thereby adapting it for use in country places Where steam and gas are not convenient.

To this end it consists in mounting the two hollow cylinders in the mangle-frame so that they overlap each other at opposite ends and in providing at these overlapping ends means for introducing the hot Water into the cylinders and discharging it therefrom, all as hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mangle, showing the overlapping ends and Water-orices; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one end of the mangle, showing the Water-orifice.

A represents the base, and B B the end standards, of a mangle-frame.

O O are the two hollow rollers. The upper roller is mounted in movable bearings, and the two rollers are driven by a crank D and cog-gears E E in the usual way.

The rollers O C are mounted so as to overlap each other at opposite ends, and to this end each roller has a long spindle or shaft f at one end, as shown. This leaves a portion of each cylinder at one end projecting beyond the end of the other cylinder. In this projecting portion of eachY cylinder I make an orilice `q,vvvhich can be closed by a cap It, or a plug or cork could be used. When the cap, plug, or cork is removed, hot Water can be introduced into each of the cylindersand be confined by replacing the cap, plug, or cork, and the cylinders will thereby be heated to a sufficient temperature to do the ordinary work lof mangling or drying clothes. When the water is to be Withdrawn from the cylinders, the caps or plugs are removed and the rollers turned until the orifice is at the bottom, when the Water will flow out.

Other means for introducing the hot water into the cylinder might be applied, but the means here shown are effective, simple, and convenient. u

I thus provide a mangle or drier for clothes that Will supply a Want long felt.

Y Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A mangle for clothes having hollow rollers mounted so as to overlap each other at opposite ends, and means provided in the overlapping portion of each roller for introducing hot water'into the rollers and discharging it therefrom, substantially as described.

2. In aY mangle for clothes, hollowT rollers, each of which has along shaft at one end in side the uprights of the machine, and an ori-V knee in the opposite end of the roller through whichhot Water can be introduced into the roller and be discharged therefrom, substantially as described.
