YARN-PRINTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,952, dated June 14, 1881. Application filed December 18, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern g Be it known that I, WILLIAM MGALLISTER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Printing Yarn for Carpeting, &c, of which the following is a specificatiom The objects of my invention are to provide a machine for printing yarn with hot colors for carpetings,&c.,and upon any kind of yarn, either wool, cotton, silk, hemp, or jute, with anydesired number of colors, so that when the same is woven in the usual manner the intended design or pattern may appear upon the r 5 fabric, as hereinafter fully explained; and it consists in the construction and use of a series of color-guides having a design or pattern rep resented thereon,and adapted for use with a case having a series of shields, whereby the several colors may be indicated which are to be placed in a corresponding series of colorcells, in order to print the thread or yarn in such manner as to produce the same design when it is woven into the fabric; and it further consists in the combination of a pair of grooved printing-rolls, each having a series of ribs which coincide with the grooves in the op ,positcs, with a cubical yarn-holder and adjustable pressure-rolls, by which the-yarn-holder 0 may be held in contact with the printing-rolls; and it further consists in the combination of such-printing-rolls with a cubical yarn-holder,
whereby aseries of colors may be printed across the yarn wound thereon and upon the entire surface of one of the four sides of such yarnholder at a singleoperation or movement of the same through the machine; and it further consists in the construction and combination of a collapsible cubical yarnholder provided with a removable jacket, whereby the printed yarn may be removed upon said jacket from. the yarn-holder and placed upon bars to dry, and a separate jacket placed over the yarnholder preparatory to receiving thereon uncolored or white yarn or unprinted yarn, ready for the printing to be repeated.

A represents a suitable frame to retain in proper positionthe several devices, and B represents a heated metal plate or stone or other heat-distributing device, whereby the dyes or colors placed in the series of cells E may be kept at the desired temperature, and
are made adjustable vertically by the inclined ripheral grooves, which form the printing-ribs H, the ribs in or upon the roll G being formed or constructed so as to exactly coincide with the grooves in the roll G, and the ribs Hupon this roll G are in exact line with the grooves in roll G, so that the two series of printingribs'H and H shall exactly cover the length of the said rollsG G,so as to produce upon theyarn I any variety of colors or shades, each of which shall exactly meet the colors contiguous thereto on each single thread thereof.
Above the horizontal printing-rolls G G are secured suitably-constructed guideways J J, to which is nicely fitted a sliding carrier-frame, K, within which is mounted, by journalsL at each en d,the cubical yarn-holderM,one side of which is adjustable orcontractible, so as to reduce the external diameter. This may be accomplishedin a variety of ways, one of which consists in forming one of the sides or faces of the holder in three p'ieces-the central one, N, wedgeshaped or tapering, and the two outer pieces, 0, being formed upon the same angle on their meeting edges, and pivoted at their wider ends, so that when 'the piece N is drawn out the side pieces, 0, may be forced inwardly, to permit a water-proof or water-repellent jacket, P, to be placed thereon readily, and the wedgeshapcd piece N introduced between the said side pieces, 0, so as to expand the holder M,
which act would cause the said jacket P to fit snugly thereon preparatoryto the introduction thereon of the yarn or thread I by winding the same in a single layer, or one thread deep, and closely together throughout the external surface of the said jacket P. a When the threads or yarn have been thus applied, the holder being mounted on the carrier-frame K and fore described, and impart the said colors in lines across the series of threads upon the under side of the said holder, or upon that surface which contacts with the printing-rolls, and when the same has been sufficiently printed the holder M is adjusted or turned so as to present the next face to the action of the printin g-rolls; and in order to save time and labor I con templateits passage or movement through the said machine in the reverse or opposite direction by any suitable mechanism, as heretofore employed and well understood, and which need not be further described in this connection. When printed upon all sides, or entire, thejacket, with the yarn or thread thereon, may be removed from the holder and placed upon the bars to dry, and the operation re peated or continued until the desired quantity of yarn or thread has been printed, containing that portion of the pattern shown upon the color-guide It, No. 1, when the next color-guide, No. 2, is to be employed to arrange the colorcells E by transposition thereof, or such refilling and introduction of new colors as the guide B may require when placed into the color-guide case S, as shown in Fig. 5, wherein it will be understood that the colors seen through the openings t therein, when the said color-guide'R is inserted so as to reach the stop or opposite end of the said case S, are to indicate the colors that are to be placed or contained in that part or series of color-cells which distribute the colors to the printing-faces of the ribs of printing-roll G, and when the said series of cells have been filled or supplied, .as
indicated, the said color-guide R is to be drawn outward one space, or so as to bring the colors previously seen under the bars or shields c, then proceed to fill or arrange the series of color-cells which are to distribute or supply the printing-ribs upon the printing-roll G in accordance with the colors as seen in this position of the color-guide, and then proceed as before, and until each color-guide employed in forming the pattern or design has been proceeded with, as described.
The color-guide may represent the color to be printed upon one or more threads, and may vary in number as the various designs may require, adapted to Brussels, tapestries, or other carpetings or fabrics produced by weaving or knitting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The color-guides R, having a design or pattern represented thereon, and adapted for v use with the case S, having shields e, whereby the several colors are indicated which are to be placed within a corresponding series of color-cells, in order to print the thread or yarn in such manner as to produce the same design when it is woven into fabric, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the pair of grooved printing-rolls, each having a series of ribs which coincide with the grooves in the opposites, with a cubical yarn-holder and pressurerolls, substantially as described, as and for the entire, may be removed from said holder with the jacket, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
