specieation of Letters Patent.` Patented Deo. 7, 1915.
Application filed August 31, 1915. iSeriel o. 48,180.
To all 107mm 'it may concer-n: y
Be it lrnown that I, SAMUEL GoLDs'rEiN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident `f of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sad- Iron, of which the following is a. full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to sad irons heated by the combustion of gas within the iron.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong, eflicient,y and inexpensive iron, in which the flame is generated by a burner located within the iron, said iiame playing against a perforated false bottomof the iron.
A further object of the invention is to|` provide a sad iron in which the products of combustion coming from the burner, Y are deiiected from the operators hand by pro viding abaiiie on the cover of the iron.
TVith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear: as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combina-y tion and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in e all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of my sad iron; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a horizontalI section on the line 4.-1 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the main body 5 of the iron is in the shape of a hollow casing, which has a false bottom 6, having a longitudinal central slot 7 extending from the rear to the front of the casing. The slot 7 is walled longitudinally by partitions 8, eX- tending from the false bottom 6 to the bottom 9 of the iron, whereby an air trough or channel is formed, which channel is open at the rear of the iron. The partitions 8 separate the space between the two bottoms of the iron into 'two chambers 10, which unite at the front, for the partitions 8 do not extend fully, to the front of the iron. Each chamber l0 is open at the rear and also has an opening A11 at the front.
alinement4 with the slot 7 .y The flame-generatingoutlets le of the burner are directed toward the false bottom 6, so that the flames will play thereupon. i Y
To prevent the heat escaping through the side openingsl of the casing from flowing on to the hand of the operator, the cover 16 of the iron is provided with a bale plate 17 which is concavo-convex, the convex surface thereof having lugs 18 for engaging lugs 19 provided therefor in the cover 16, which prevent the turning of the baille plate on the screw 20 which fastens the baille plate to the cover. The screw 2O serves also as means for securing the handle 21 of the iron in place. The handle is prevented from turning on the plate by the lugs 18 engaging the handle. The body 5 is provided with a clamping member 22 for engaging the cover 16 and alining the same to the body, as is common in this class of irons.
While Ihave described the principle of operation, together' with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: p
l. In a sad iron, a hollowr casing; a perfo rated false bottom spaced from the bottomr the slot into an air channel open at the rear.
of the casing and at the front within the casing, said partitions dividing the space between the two bottoms into chambers, one to each side of the channel, communicating with Aeach other and with the channel through the medium of the opening in the channel within the casing, said chambers being open in the rear of the casing and also 'in the front; a burner located above the air passage and adapted to direct the flame ask thereof on tothe perforatedbottom; rand a cover `for said casing. f
3. In a sad iron, a hollow casing, a burner therein, a coveror the casing, said casing having openings'at the cover, a concavolugs on the convex surface of theballe plate,
a handle on the plate engaging the lugs on the concave surface thereof, and a screw se-A 10 curing the handle and plate to the cover, said lugsl on the Ycover anol plate preventing the turning ofthe plate on the cover` and` of theV handleon the plate'.
