To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs Ros'nnnAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of lvlanhattan, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a sad-iron embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the base casting of the same, the handle or upper casting being removed; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 8, Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the base casting of my new iron, the handle or upper casting being shown in side elevation disconnected therefrom; Fig. 5 is a trans verse sectional view through my new iron on the line 5-5, Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a rear elevational view of my new sad iron.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in sad-iro-ns and particularly to that class of sad-irons wherein a combustible fluid is used as the heating medium, the objects of my invention being to provide a sad-iron of the kind stated which is simple in construction, has but few separate parts, and the parts of which may be readily and quickly assembled and easily, firmly, and positively secured operatively together, which may be cheaply and economically mainitt'actured, which will not easily get out of good working order, which is etlicient in operation, and which is so constructed that the flame or heat from the ignited combustible fluid will be distriliuted over the base of the iron and the same there by evenly and uniformly heated tln'oughout its area, and to improve generally upon sadiro-ns of the class mentioned.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel constructionpf the several parts of my new iron and in the novel arrangement and combination of the same, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, my new sad iron comprises substantially and preferably but three separate parts or memhers-21. lower or body portion or base casting, as I will call it, A, an upper or handle portion casting, as it might be called, B, and a burner C. Lower or body portion casting A is preferably a metallic casting open at its top and coniprising a bottom wall 1 of any suitable thickness, flat on its outer or ironing surface, as at 1, preferably pointed at its forward end, as at l, and having the shape in plan elevation of i the usual iron-, and side and rear walls 2 and 3', respectively, projecting upwardly from bottom of wall 1 and extending together continuously therearound. Side wall 2 integrally comprises, as shown partici'ilarly in Fig. 5, a portion 2 projecting preferably and approximately perpendicularly upwardly from the outer edge of bottom wall 1 and a portion 2" extending upwardly, and somewhat obliquely inwardly, from portion 2, "all 2 at the point of connection between portions 2 and 2 preferably curving inwardly, as shown at 2, and being provided with a series of slotted or elongated openings 2. Along its upper edge wall 2 is preferably scalloped or cut away as shown, to provide a series or a plurality of substantially U-shaped openings .1-.
Cast integrally within member A approximately at the base of portion 2 of side wall 2, see particularly Fig. 5, is a flat horizon-- tally-disposed wall 5 preferably cut away or divided centrally and longitlulinally, as at 5, into portions (3 and 7which extend longitudinally in castingAfrom rear wall 3 to a point slightly rcarwardly of point 1", as shown particularly in Fig. 2. (last integrally with casting A and lying between, and connected to, said portions (5 and 7 of wall 5 and bottom wall 1 are separated series of thickened vertically-disposed webs 88, shown particularly in Fig. 3. The webs of each of said respective series terminate at their inner surface preferably flush with the inner edges of flat wall portions 6 and 7; the outer surface of the webs of each of said series is on a line preferably some dis tance inwardly from the inner surface of side wall 2 and preferably concentric therewith, whereby a continimus air channel, as at t), communicating at its ends with the exterior through suitable openings 9' in rear wall 3, is provided interior-1y around casting A along the greater part of portion 2 of side wall 2'. Leading froin said air passage or channel 9 inwardly toward the longitudin'al central channel or space 5 between said series of webs and said horizontal wall portions 6 and 7, which channel at its rear end also communicates with the exterior through a suitable opening 5 in rear Wall 8, are air passages or channels 10 formed by, and between, said webs 8, each of said channels 10 being in alinement preferably with one of said elongated or slotted openings 2 which lead from the exterior into said channel or passage 9. Rear wall 3 is also preferably provided above the level or plane of wall 5 with a plurality of outlet openings 3. 7
Upper casting B comprises a handle plate 11 adapted to extend completely over and close the top of base casting A and to be supported by, and to rest upon the upper edge of, side wall 2, as shown particularly in Fig.
'1. Extending upwardly from opposite ends of handle-plate 11 are similar handle-arms 12, the upper ends of these arms being preferably enlarged, as at 12 for receiving a suitable preferably wooden handle 13 and also suitably perforated for receiving and holding a through-bolt 14: for securing said handle 13 firmly in position. Integral with handle-plate 11 and depending therefrom adjacent its rear end, is a rearwardly curved and projecting lug or looking member 15 adapted, when castings A and B are to be assembled and operatively connected, to be inserted into and removably fit in a cooperating elongated slotted opening 16 in rear wall 3 of base A. At its forward end or point handle-plate 11 is provided with a short longitudinal slot adapted to fit the base of a bent locking-1nember 17 threaded or otherwise pivoted in and upstanding from a thickened portion 18 within and atthe forward point of casting A, as shown in Fig. 4:, this member 17 being swung to one side of a longitudinal position relatively to base A to releasably engage with handleplate 11 andthereby at their forward end lock castings A and B operatively together.
Burner C is preferably an elongated tubular member bent, as at 19, to provide a portion 20 provided at its open end with a suitable mixing chamber 21 (for purposes well understood) and adapted to receive the end of a combustible fuel supply pipe (not shown), and a burner portion proper 22. Burner portion 22 fits through a suitable central opening in, and is supported at its rear by, rear wall 3 of base A and extends longitudinally and centrally within base A above said central channel 5 to forward point 1 thereof, where it fits in a suitable circular recess 18 in, and is closed and supported at its forward end by, said thickened portion 18 of base A, this burner portion 22 being provided on its under surface with obliquely downwardly and outwardly disposed series of jet perforations 22 and a centrally-disposed jet opening 22 at its forward end. By means of a set screw or the like 23 seated in a lug 3 inte gral with, and projecting inwardly from, rear wall 3 of base A, burner C is releasably, but firmly, held in operative position in base A. Preferably burner C is locked in base A by screw 23 in such position that, as
shown, portion 21 thereof will project obliquely upwardly and thus be out of the way of the work being operated upon and also of the hand or arm of the operator.
In operatively assembling castings A and B, casting B is placed upon casting A, lug 15 fitted into its slot 16, and locking member 17, which is now extending longitudinally of base A or in the position thereof shown in Fig. 2, engaged by forwardly slotted handle-plate 11. Locking member 17 is now swung to one side of said longitudinal position and plate 11 engaged thereby, whereupon castings A and will be at front and rear firmly and positively, though detachably, held or secured operatively together. The flame of the ignited combustible fluid supplied to burner C and issuing from said series of jet openings 22" and said central perforations 22 is directed downwardly and outwardly from burner 20 directly upon said portions 6 and 7 of wall 5 and point 1 of bottom wall 1. Said series of openings 2 together with said air passages or chan nels 5, 9, and 10, provide means for a plentiful supply of air tosupport combustion, and said outlet openings 4: with said openings 8 provide escape passages to the exterior for the products of combustion arising from within base A; Webs 8 will, in the movement of the iron while in use, tend to direct the air entering the air passages or channels 5, 9, and 10 forwardly within the area of side wall 2 and out through said escape or outlet openings 4 and 3. The portions 6 and 7 of wall 5, while heated directly by the flame of the combustible fluid from burner 22, will prevent the jets or flame of the ignited combustible fluid coming directly in cont-act with bottom wall 1, the heat therefrom being directly radiated or transmitted through webs 8 and portion 2 of wall 2 to, and the circulation of air within base casting A tending to evenly and uniformly distribute the heat over, bottom or ironing wall 1.
I have found my new iron to be highly efiicient in operation, and from the foregoing it will be seen that my new iron comprises but few separate parts, and that said parts may be quickly and easily operatively assembled and secured together, and it should be understood that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts of my new iron may be made and substituted for those herein shown and de scribed without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pa 1' out is:
1. A iron base or body portion comprising a hollow casting provided interiorly with a longitudinally cut-away or divided ho-rizontally-disposed wall above and spaced away from its bottom wall, and series of vertieally-disposed separated webs lying between, and connected to, said horizmitally disposed wall portions and said bottom wall, said webs terminating at their inner laces substantially flush with the inner edges ot said wall portions and providing a central longitudinal channel in said base casting and at their outer faces being spaced inwardly from, and providing a channel around, the side wall of said base casting, the walls of said base casting being provided with openings leading into said channels; substantially as described.
2. A gas iron base or body portion comprising a hollow casting provided interiorly with a longitudinally cut-away or divided horizontally-disposed wall above and spaced away from its bottom wall, and series of verticzlly-disposed separated webs lying between, and connected to, said horizontally disposed wall portions and said bottom wall, said Webs tern'iinatiug at their iiiiner :laces substantially tlush with the inner edges of said wall portions and providing a central longitudinal channel in said base casting and at their outer faces being spaced inwardly from, and providing an outer channel around, the side wall of said base casting, the spaces between the webs of said series providing channels communicating with said longitudinal and outer channels and the "alls of said base casting being provided with openings leading into said longitudinal and outer channels; substantially as described.
3. A gas iron base or body portion comprising a hollow casting provided interiorly with a longitudinally cut-away or divided horizontallydisposed wall above and spaced away from its bottom wall, and series of verticallydisposed separated webs lying between, and connected to, said horizontallydisposed wall portions and said bottom wall, said webs terminating at their inner faces substantially flush with the inner edges of said wall portions and providing a central longitudinal channel in said base casting and at their outer faces being spaced inwardly from, and providing an outer channel around, the side wall of said base casting, the spaces between the webs of said series providing channels communicating with said longitudinal and outer channels and the walls of said base casting being provided with a plurality of air-inlet openings leading from the exterior of the casting into said longitudinal and outer channels and above the plane of said horizontally-disposed wall with outlet openings leading to the exterior of the casting; subshmtially as described.
4-. at their inner faces substantially flush with the inner edges of said wall portions and providing a central longitudinal channel in said base casting and at their outer faces being spaced inwa "dly from, and providing an outer channel around, the side wall of said base casting, the spaces between the webs of said series providing channels cominunicating with said longitudinal and outer channels and the rear and side walls of said base casting being provided with a plurality of air-inlet openings leading from the exterior of the casting into said longitudinal and outer channels, respectively, an upper casting having a handle-plate fitting on said base casting, and a burner extending longitudinally within said casting above said longitudinal channel, said burner being provided in its under portion with a plurality of jet openings; substantially as described.

A. iron comprising a hollow base casting provided interiorly with a longitudinally cut-away or divided horizontallydisposed wall above and spaced away from its lJOttOER wall andseries of verticallydisposed separated webs lying between, and connected to, said horiZontally-disposed wall portions and said bottom wall, said webs terminating at their inner faces substantially flush with the inner edges of said wall the spaces between the webs of said series providing channels communicating with said longitudinal and outer channelsand the rear and side walls of said base casting being provided with a plurality of air-inlet openings leading from the exterior of the casting into said longitudinal and outer channels respectively, and above the plane of said horizontally-dispos-ed wall with outlet openings leading to the exterior of the casting, an upper casting having a handleplate fitting on said base casting, and a burner extending longitudinally within said casting above said longitudinal channel, said burner being provided in its under portion with a plurality of jet openings; substantially as described.
