citizen of the United. States, residing at- Cotton Plant, in thecounty of Woodruff and.
State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in sad lrons, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sad-irons and more particularly to that class of sad-irons known' as self-heating sad irons.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of, a sad-iron embodying various improvements over a patent on a sad-iron granted tome July 15, 1913, No.:1067557. I
A still further embodiment of the invention resides: in the provision, of deflecting plates arranged withinthe body of the sad-' iron and-which can be removed fori'the purpose ofzrepl'acing. them bynew, ones in the. event that theywshould become broken or worn out.
In the further disclosure ofthe invention reference is to be'hadtothe,accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in Whichsi-milar characters ofreference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe sadiron; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through'the body of the iron, the tank and adjacent parts being shown-in" side elevationyFig. 3 is a plan view of the'body of the iron, with the burner and tank removed; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view t aken through the body of the iron, as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the burner and tank, showing the member for seating the burner within the body of the iron.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a sad-iron 10 consisting of a body 11 having a flat face 12. The body 11 provides a heating chamber 13 and is adapted to receive a suitable cover 14 carrying a handle 15, the said cover having a forwardly extending pin 16 adapted to pass through an aperture 17 in the front end of the body 11 in order that the cover can be more readily positioned upon the body, while swingingly mounted upon the top of the cover by means of a bolt that passes through its central portion is an arm the extremities of which are adapted'to move into engagement with slots 22 formed in posts 21 that are in turn formed integral with the body 11.
From this arrangement it will be seen thatwhen the pin 16 is inserted into the aperture 17 and the arms swung to a position to insert the extremities thereofinto the slots 22 the cover will be held against movement. A
series of relatively spaced uprights 18 projectlupwardly from the side walls of the body ll and the cover is adapted to repose thereon, thus forming slots 19, between the uprights, and through which air can readily pass, the slots being further provided for the escape of any superfluous heat.
v A burner tube 25 is adapted to lie within the body llandhas threaded connection with a. substantially circular supporting plate 26, the said burner tube being preferably providedwith a series of slots 27 for the'escape of gas and at whichpoint the gas is ignited. Supported upon the plate 26 and projecting forwardly therefrom, immediately above-the burner tube 25, is a generator tube 28. Thesupporting plate 26 has rigid therewith a pipe 29 supporting a tank 30 adaptedto contain-gasolene, the said pipe 29 communicating with one end of the generator tube:28.' Similarly, asecond pipe 31 is rigid with they supporting plate 26 and projects rearwardly therefrom, the said second pipe having communication with the other end of the generator tube 28 and carrying a suitable needle valve 32, slightly spaced from the inner or open end of the burner tube 25 and having an opening 33 adjacent thereto so that when gas is gener-' ated in the generator tube 28, upon opening the valve 32, the gas will pass into the burner tube 25 and be mixed with air at the point where it enters the burner tube.
A rear wall 34; is formed within the body 11, a distance from the rear tapered end of the body and slightly behind the posts to the under surface of the cover. It will be apparent that the valve and tank are arranged eXteriorly of the body 11 and in order to substantially close the rear end of the body a depending flange 88 is formed on the rear end of the cover 1 1 and projects over the rear face of the supporting plate 26, thus not only facilitating the proper positioning of the supporting plate but also preventing the flame from the burner tube adjacent the side walls thereof, suitable screws 41 being passed through the ends of the deflecting plates and into the posts 10, thus rigidly supporting the deflecting plates in horizontal position within the body and on both sides of the burner tube so that the ;heat of the flame thereof will be evenly distributed throughout the body of the sadiron. The deflecting plates 39 are preferably made of cast iron or the like and if they should become burned out can be readily removed bysimply removing the screws 41 and entirely removing the deflecting plates from the body and replacing the same by new ones.

plish the purpose for which it is designed; embodies various improvements over the patent on a sad-iron granted to me July 15, 1913 and bearing the number"1,067,557; that by providing the deflecting plates the heat from the flame of the burner tube will be more evenly distributed throughout the body of the iron and particularly exert itself against the flat face of the body; that the cover will be more securely held in locked position upon the body 11 of the sad-iron and that the burner and generator tubes as well as the tank supplying the vapor to the burner tube will be rigidly supported by the plate 26 and which will be substantially held in rigid position on the body of the iron by arranging the same between the rear end of the body and the rear wall 34 provided for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
A sad iron comprising a hollow body, having a rear wall, a cover for said body and formed with a depending flange, there being oppositely disposed openings in said body where said cover engages the body, a shield plate detachably supported by said cover interiorly of said body ata point below the openings, and heating means supported on said rear wall and including a plate engaging the front surface of said flange and the rear surface of the said rear wall for preventing accidental movement of said means within said body.
