SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,308, dated October 3, 1899. 'Application filed January 23, 1899. Serial No. 703,036. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY OSHEA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Temporary Supports for \Vindow-Sashes, of which the following is a specification. I

My invention relates to certain improvements relating to a temporary support for window-sash and designed to hold said sash in convenient position for washing or glazing.

The invention is particularly adapted to use in connection with that class of windowsash which are removably supported in the frame, so as to be easily taken out of the same for any purpose which requires easy access to the outside of the glass.

To such end the invention consists in certain novel characteristics, which will be fully described in connection with aremovable support of preferred construction and will be clearly pointed out in the claims. The drawings show this removable support by means of four views, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective of one side of a window-frame, showing said support temporarily secured thereto and the two windowsash securely held in convenient position by the support. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the support alone. Fig. 3 is aview from the outer side of the window-frame, showing the means for temporarily attaching the support thereto; and Fig. dis a longitudinal vertical section of the frame and the support, the latter being in its proper operative position with respect to the frame.

In the drawings the window-frame is lettcred A, the window-sill B, and the windowstool O.

A bar D of suitable strength is provided at its outer end with a pair of hooks E, and holes F are bored in the outer edge of the windowsill to receive the ends of these hooks. The bar is provided with a series of holes 01, and a pin d, fitted to these holes, is preferably attached to the bar by means of a chain d so as to be in a convenient position for use in connection therewith. To attach the bar to the window-sill, the ends of the hooks are thrust into the holes in the latter and the pin d passed downwardly close up to the edge of the window-stool to prevent the bar from being pushed outward out of engagement with the sill. By these means a secure attachment of the bar to the sill is effected and a firm and stable support for the sash is gained.- The bar is long enough to'pass the line of the center of gravity of the sash and provided with a pair of sash-clamps G G, the clamp G being provided with a fiat jaw g, against which the lower rail of the lower sash may rest, and an opposing clamping-screw g, supported in an upwardly-extending lug g and provided with a washer g to press against the windowsash. The clamp G has an oblique face g to receive the check-rail of the upper sash and an opposing clamping-screw g threaded in an upwardly-extending lug g and provided with a washer g In the use of the support in'connection with a detachable window-sash the lower sash is first raised sufficiently to permit of the attachment of the support to the window-sill, after which said lower sash is removed from the casing and secured in the clamp G. The upper sash is then removed and secured in the clamp G in case both are to be operated upon. This brings both sash into the room or apartment into which the window opens and in a convenient position for washing or other operation.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A temporary support for window-sash consisting of a bar, provided at one end with devices for engagement with the windowframe adapted to hold the bar in a horizontal position, extending inward from the window, said bar being of sufficient longitudinal extent to pass the center of gravity of the window-sash and being provided with clamps at its inner end adapted to secure said sash in position upon the bar; substantially as described.

2. A temporary support for window-sash, consisting of the bar, D, provided at one end with hooks adapted to enter the window-sill and at the other end with clamps adapted to support the window-sash; substantially as described.
