UNITED STATES PATENT \VALTER M. VIALL, OF BARBERTON, OHIO.
FIRE-MOUTH FOR KILNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,223, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed llngustll, 1899. Serial No. 726,099. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER M. VIALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Months for Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in the firing-places, technically termed firemouths, of kilns for burning sewer-pipe and kindred articles. These kilns are ordinarily circular in form and are provided at intervals with firing-places, in which the fuel is burned in such manner that the products of combustion pass into the interior of the kiln and thence through aperforated floor into an underground flue to the chimney.
The object of my invention is to so construct the fire-mouth vthat the bitumen of the coa-l will be driven off in the form of gas and pass blazing into the kiln.' The coke formed in the process will be pushed by each addi-- tional charge of fuel into a connected chamber, where it is fed with fresh air, and becoming intensely heated adds its heat to the gaseous product of the coal, thereby securing complete combustion and enabling the ware in the kiln to be burned with a much less consumption of fuel than has heretofore been necessary for the purpose.
To the aforesaid object my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference -numerals represent like parts in both views, Figure I is an elevation of a part of a kiln embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section of the same at the line X X.
Referring to the figures, l is the kiln-wall, and 2 the top, having at intervals chimneys 3 to assist in permitting the escape of heat to cool the kiln after the burning is completed.
About the base of the kiln are two concentric walls 4 5, the latter being the greater. The fire-mouths are, as hereinbefore, located at intervals, and the construction of them and the adjacent parts are thus described: In the main wall is an arch 6, closed during burning and opened at the proper period of burning to introduce salt to effect a glazing of the ware. l
Below the arch 6 in the wall 4t is an arch 7, through which the coal is fed, and below these .arches are two concentric arches S 9 in the wall 5, the former serving to sustain and complete the wall at that point and to permit the entrance of air directly into the fuel. The second is continued substantially to the inner line of the wall l, and beyond the front is perforated by means of spaced brick, and this is technically called the lire-table and practically forms the grate, while the space beneath constitutes the ash-pit 11. Inside the kiln, back of these several arches, is a brick partition 10, reaching above the salt-arch G, connected at each end by means of wing-Walls with the inside of the kiln-wall to form a recess, technically termed the bag, inclosing` the arches 6 7 8 9, the p bottom of which is bricked up nearly to the arch 9.
In operation coal is fed through the arch 7 and falls on the lire-table, where it burns, being fed with air between the arches S 9 and through the perforated fire-table 9, the products 0f combustion passing up within the bag to the interior of the kiln. In this part the bitumen is driven oif in gas, and as new coal is introduced the coke thus produced is pushed over into the bag, where it receives air-from the ash-pit l1 and continues to burn until reduced to ashes, the products of combustion mingling in the bag with the gas from the coal and producing a complete combustion, carrying into the kiln an intense heat entirely free from smoke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl An improved flre-mouth for kilns consisting of an arched opening for iring extended infront of the kiln-wall, an air-duct-below and extended in front of said firing-opening, a fire-table of open brickwork extending from the front of the air-duct to the inner line of the kiln-wall, and abag within and connected with said side walls, opening into said kiln above said firing-opening and inclosing and internally connected with said lire-table and ash-pit, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand.
VALTER M. VIALL.
In presence of- C. P. HUMPHREY, C. E. HUMPHEEY.
