'parts and combinations of the same, as will.
. be fully described hereinafter and then point- IO ed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indi- 'cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of thesame with the boiler omitted. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement snbstan tially on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is 2o a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3.
The rotary engine is provided with a cylinder A, in which is mounted to rotate apiston 13, having two piston-heads B 13*, formed with 25 buckets B B extending in opposite directions, one piston-head being used for driving the engine forward and the other for reversing purposes, as hereinafter more fullyd'e-' scribed. The cylinder A when used on a locomotive is mounted transversely on the front truck in the usual manner, and the shaft 0 of the piston carries onits outer ends crankdisks D D, connected by pitmen E E with the drivers F F of the locomotive. 7
3 When the steam acts on the buckets B of the head 13', then the rotary motion given to the piston causes a forward movement of the locomotive owing to the connectionwith the drivers, as above described but when the 0 steam acts on the buckets B of the other p is-' ton-head then the piston rotates in an opposite direction and thelocomotive backs up.
The cylinder A is provided with two steaminlet ports a, leading to the interior of the cyl- 4 5 inder into cavities Earranged segmentally on the inside of the cylinder at or about the middle of the two piston-heads B B as plainly in dicated in the drawings. The outer en ds of the said ports a are connected with inlet-pipes G G, extending into a smoke box H, and either of said pipes is adapted to be connected by a valve G2 with a steam-supply pipe G extend- .ing-into a dome I, said pipe containing the usual throttle-valve for regulating theamount of steam passing from the dome into the pipe G The cylinder A is also provided with two exhaust-ports c for carrying the exhaust-steam from the cylinder-heads B B to exhaust-pipes J J ,'con'taining a valve K and extending in the smoke-box H, as is plainly indicated in the drawings. The valve K has a stem K extending through the smoke-box to the outside to carry at its outer end an arm K connected by a link K ivith the interior of the cab, so that the engineer can manipulate the valve K so as to open or close either of the 1 pipes J. or J by turning the said valve accordingly. by the engineer from the cab, and for this purpose the Stern G of the valve is provided a link G with the cab to permit the engineer to shift the valve G so as to connect the sup ply-pipe G with either of the pipes G'or G.
When the several parts are in the position illustrated in the drawings, the pipe G is connected .by the valve G with the pipe G, so that live steam can pass'from the boiler into the cylinder A to act onthe buckets of the cylinder-head B to turn the piston B for propelling the locomotive forward. The
exhaust-pipe J, leading from the cylinder to The valve G is similarly operated at its outer end with an arm G connected by V the head B7, is now opened, while the other pipe J is closed, so that no exhaust-steam can pass from the smoke-box down the pipe J to act on the buckets B of the head B while at the same time a free escape is pro- When it is desired to reverse the engine, the engineer turns the valve G and then the valve K, so as to connect the supply-pipe G with the pipe G and ,to cut off the pipe G from the steam-supply. The valve K closes the pipe J and opens the pipe J to form an [The exhaust steain from the pipe J cannot enter the pipe J as the latter is closed, and hence there is no back pressure possible in th'e'cylinder A at the piston-head B.
vided for the exhaust-steam from that part of the cylinder containingfthe head B.
The cavities Z) extend a suliicient distance 1 respectively for the pistons, a pipe leading around in the cylinder to supply one, two, or i to each feed-port, the pipes being joined to more buckets with the motive agent. The l each other to form a valve-seat and commupiston is suitably packed to avoid leakage of nicating with the steam-supply at such point, the motive agent. 1 a valve Working in the valve-seat connec- Having thus fully described my invention, tions between the valve and the locomotive- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I cab, two exhaust-pipes respectively for the Paten t exhaust-ports, the exhaust-pipes being join ed In a locomotive, the combination with the to each other to form a valve-seat, a valve smoke-box and truck thereof, of a rotary en- I mounted in the valve-seat of the exhaustgine-cylinder mounted on the truck beneath I pipes and commanding the same, and conl l l the smoke-box, pistons Working in the cylinnections between the exhaust-valve and the (ler, connections between the pistons and the driving-wheels of the locomotive, the upper loco-motive-cab.
