is in such position' that communication between the pneumatic chamber and the hydraulic chamber 22 is attained. The valve 29 is provided with exhaust ports or pas* sages 36 and 37. The exhaust port or passage 36 is designed to exhaust the air from the chamber 23 while the port or passage is designed to exhaust the air from the chainber'22, it depending on the position of the valve. The circular disk or plate 34 is provided with openings 38 and 39, with which the passages or ports 36 and 37 register so that the air may exhaust to the atmosphere. Rising upwardly from the partition or bottom 2O on opposite sides of the bearing 28 are fianges or walls 40, to cover one or the other of the ports or passages 36 and 37 when out of communication with the respectivechaniber. A pipe 41 communicates the chamber 22 with the chamber 42 of the cyl inder 7, and ,this pipe is provided with a l valve 43 having an voperating arm 44. A
pipe 45 extends from the chamber 23 and communicates with the other end of the cylinder chamber 42. This pipev45 has a valve 46, which is provided with an operat ing arm 47. Secured by a key or feather -48 on an extension 49 of the valve 29 is a lever 50, and connected to the arm 51 as at 52 is a pair of links 53 and 54. vThe link 53 is connected to the arm 44 as at 55 and the link 54 is connected to the arm 47 as at 56. The lower extremity of the arm 51 has a pin 57, which plays in the slot 58 of the link 59, which is pivoted at 60 to an arm 6l of a collar 62, which is adjustably secured onthe piston rod 13 by means of the bolt or set screw 63. The upper arm 64 of the lever 50 has connected to it a rod 65. This rod 65 may be manually reciprocated, or may be operated by a lever (not shown). Suitable straining means 66 are provided in the chambers 22 and 23 for covering the exhaust ports and the intake port or passage 35, which is transversely of the valve. The cylinder chamber 42 is supplied with any suitable hydraulic means to the extent shown in the drawings, and air under pressure is admitted through the pipe 26 into the chainber 24, and in this case the air will pass lthrough the port or passage 35 into the chamber 22, through the pipe 41 (the valve 43 having been opened) so as to force the hydraulic medium against the piston 8, operating the piston 8 to the position shown i* in F ig. 2, thereby operating the link motion mechanism so'that the locomotive is capable of traveling straight ahead. vAfter so opcrating the link motion mechanism, the rod 65 is reciprocated so as to position the valve 29 in a neutral position, in which case the intake port or passage 35 and the exhaust' ports 36 and 37, and the valves 43 and 46 are'closed. Inlcrder to reverse, theprod 65 is reciprocated so as to rock the-valve 29,
whereby the port oi passage 35 will coinmunicatc with the chamber 23. In rthis case air under pressure will enter the chamber 23, and pass through the pipe 45 (the valve 46 having been opened) and into the piston cylinder 42, forcing the hydraulic medium against the piston, reciprocating the saine, and through the piston rod and link or pit man 3, the link motion mechanism will be reversed. ln this operation the air previously used in the chamber 22 will exhaust out through the port 37.
rlhe invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and iisefi1l`isz- 1. In combination with a link motion, :i reversing device, tor actuating the shifting lever of said link n'iotioinsaid. reversing device comprising a hydraulic cylinder, a piston reciprocating therein and having a. rod connected with the shifting lever oi the link motion, ay chest on the cylinder having hydraulic chambers and a super-imposed pneumatic chamber, pipes of communication bctween said hydraulic chambers of the chest and the ends of thc hydraulic cylinder, said pipes of communication having valves, an oscillating cylinder -alve mounted in a bearing ot' the chest and having a port adapted, when the cylinder valveis oscillated, to put either of the hydraulic chambers in communication with the pneumatic chamber, whereby air may operate on the hydraulic means in either end of thehydraulic cylinder for reciprocating the piston, whereby the shiftingr lever oi'" the link motion may be actuated, said cylinder valve having exhaust ports for exhausting the air from either of the hydraulic clianibcrs ot the chest, and connections between the cylinder valve and the valves of' the pipes ot communication for reversing said valves.
2. The combination with :i link motion, ot a reversing device for shitting the lever of said link motion said reversing device coinprising a hydraulic cylinder, a` piston i'ecip rocating therein and having ii rod connected with the shifting lever of the link motion, a chest on said cylinder having hydraulic chambers land a super-imposed pneumatic chamber, pipes of communication between said hydraulic chambers of the chest and. the ends of the hydraulic cylinder, valves iii said pipes, an oscillating cylinder valve in a bearing of the chest, said cylinder valve having a port adapted to put either of' the hydraulic chambers in communication with the pneumatic chamber, whereby an` may operate on the hydraulic means for torcing it into the hydraulic cylinder to operate the piston, whereby the shifting lever of the link motion may be actuated,` a straining means in each of the hydraulic chambers for straining the pneumatic means. said cylindci' valvc having exhaust ports for exhausting air from either of the hydraulic chambers ot seid valves,
the chest, and lever and link connections be 'tween the cylinder valve and the valves of the pipes ofcommunication for reversing said lever and link connections being connected with the piston rod of the piston.
