HENRY E. PETERSON, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
DEVICE FOR DRAWING CORKS.
SFECIFICATIGN formingpart of Letters Patent No. 632,742, dated September 12, 1899.
Application filed January 10, 1899. Serial No. 701,718. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Drawing Corks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for drawing corks or stoppers from bottles or similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to take the place of ordinary corkscrews.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device which I employ, part thereof being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a similar side view, parts of the construction being shown in section and the separate parts of the device being shown in a different position.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device for the purpose herein specified which comprises a shaft 5, having a cross-head or handle 6. The shaft 5 is pointed at its lower end, as shown at 7, and provided with a central longitudinal bore 8, which extends upwardly through the cross-head or handle 6 and downwardly to a point 9, where it communicates with two side slots or openings 10, between which the bottom of the shaft 8 is formed into an upwardly-directed wedge-shaped portion 10*. I also provide a rod 11, which is passed longitudinally through the bore 8 of the shaft 5 and which is divided longitudinally at its lower end to form side spring hooks or prongs 12. The upper end of the rod 11 is provided with a button or head 13, and mounted on said rod between said button or head is a spiral spring 14:, which normally holds the rod 11 in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
Vhenever it is desired to withdraw a cork or stopper from a bottle or similar vessel, the point 7 of the shaft 5 is forced downwardly into said cork or stopper until the slots or openings 10 are concealed thereby. The rod 11 is then forced downwardly by pressure applied to the button or head 13. This operation forces the spring-prongs l2 outwardly into the stopper, and the stopper is removed by pulling on the cross-head or handle 6. When the pressure is removed from the button or head 13, the rod 11 is thrown upward, as shown in Fig. 1, by the spring 14, and the spring-prongs 12 are drawn into the position shown in said figure, and the cork or stopper may be removed from the shaft 5.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A device for the purpose herein described, comprising a cross-head or handle provided with a shaft having a central longitudinal bore which extends outwardly through said cross-head or handle, said shaft being pointed at one end and provided with side slots or openings, and a rod passing longitudinally through the central bore of the shaft and provided at its lower end with spring-prongs which are adapted to pass out through said side slots or openings, said rod being provided at its upper end with a button or head, and a spring which is mounted thereon between said button or head and the crosshead or handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device for the purpose described, comprising a shaft 5 provided with a cross-head or handle 6, said shaft being pointed at one end and provided adjacent thereto with side slots or openings 10, said shaft being also provided with a longitudinal bore 8 which extends outwardly through the cross-head or handle, and a rod which passes longitudinally through the central bore of the shaft and through the cross-head or handle, and is provided at its lowerend with spring-prongs and thereto, and a rod passed through said shank and provided at its lower end with springp'rongs which are adapted to pass outwardly through said slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of January, 1899.
HENRY E. PETERSON. lVitnesses:
LENA PETERSON, CHARLES JULEN.
