TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, NATHANIEL LEWIS and FRIEND LEWIS, of' Adams, Jefferson county, 'New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cheese Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to cheese boxes manufactured from paper, card-board, and other similar mate- Arial; and the invention consists in a novel manner of forming the head to both the body and the cover of the i box, whereby great strength, firmness, portability, and durability are obtained, and moulding prevented, as will be obvious from the followingl detail description of a box made laccording to our invention, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of one head of the box, with it partially broken out upon one side to more fully illus trate the mode of forming the same.
Figure 2, a central transverse vertical section; and
Figure 3, a view of the material as eut from the side and bottom of a box according to our invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. a
A, in the drawings, represents the body of a box, which is formed of a strip of paper or card-board, or other similar material, bent into'the proper shape therefor, `with its two ends properly secured together where they moet, or are overlapped, as the case may be. B, the head to the body of the box, which head is formed of three thicknesses or layers of material, firmly secured together cnc upon another by means of' cement, or any other suitable adhesive material, the inner and outer layers or thicknesses being separated by the intermediate layers C, made from the same piece of material of which the body oi' the box is composed by cutting one edge oi" the same in the form shown in fig. 3, or in such a form that when bent at a more or less rightangle to the body A a complete cover will be produced to suchend ofthe box body. Then applying the outer and inner layers a bottom or head is obtained of great strength, firmness, andi durability. The head to the cover of the box is formed in a manner similar to the body, as above described. To'Y render the box water-prooil any suitable water-proof' varnish may bc used, and the joints may be sealed by covering them with cloth, rendered waterproof in any suitable manner. It is not necessary that the points of the lap should touch or meet each other. In gs. l and 3 a modification is sho'wn in red lines, in which the laps are only about .one-half the size of those previously described, thus leaving a central space, which can be filled with cuttings or waste paper.
A great advantagev in using paper boxes for packing cheese is that the porousness of the paper will allow i the radiation of moisture from the cheese, thus preventing moulding or fungus growth. The high price of timber, and the consequent value of' wooden boxes, will render our box of great importance to the trade. ts chcapness, utility, durability, and portability will prove its practicability.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A s an article of manufacture, a cheese box constructed oi"v paper, provided with a removable head B and a head B, permanently secured to the laps C, which are made in one piece with the side of the box, and secured between disks D, substantially asdescribed.
The above specification of, our invention signed by us this 15th day of January, 1867.
' NATHANIEL LEWIS, Witnesses i FRIEND LEWIS.
FRANK STONE, DANIEL Fox, 2d.
