Description
No. 632,674. Patented Sept. 5, I899.
G. A. CARPENTER.
FLY EXTERMINATDR.
(Application filed June 17, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
GEORGE A. CARPENTER, OF FORT MORGAN, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO EDWARD S. OSLER, OF SAME PLACE.
FLY-EXTERMINATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,674, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed June 17, 1899. Serial No. 720,917. (No model.)
To (all whom it nuty concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE A. CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Morgan, in the county of Morgan and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Fly-Exterminator, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for catching flies or feeding them with poison.
My invention consists in the combination, with a water-receptacle, of a medicated member formed of absorbent substance, such as paper-pulp, and arranged to be inserted in and draw water from the receptacle by capillary attraction, to the end that the medicated portion of the member may be dampened and supply a poisonous liquid to be partaken of by the flies.
My invention consists, further, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed outin my claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan of the medicated member, portions beingbroken away to illustrate the stiffening-frame therein. Fig. 2 is an elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, illustrating the mounting of the medicated member in a water-receptacle for use.
In the construction of the device, as shown, the numeral 10 designates what I have termed a medicated member and comprises a circular body and integral stem portion radially thereof, the body and stem portion preferably being made of paper-pulp or two sheets of blotting-paper laid face to face and connected in any desired manner. Within the medicated member 10 there is located a stiffening-frame 11, formed of a single length of wire bent into a ring and an integral twisted stem portion radially of the ring. The stiffening-frame 11 is located centrally of the medicated member 10 and may be rolled Within the pulpy substance or located between the sheets of fibrous spongy blotting-paper and serves to stiffen and support the medicated member in use. Within the space comprised by the outline of the ring of the stiffeningframe 11, as indicated stippling in Fig. 3, I
apply to the medicated member a quantity of poisonous substance, such as arsenic, either in powdered form or first in liquid form, and then permit it to dry within the fibrous spongy sheet.
In use I bend the stem portion of the medicated member and stiffening-frame manually into the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and insert the stem portion in a vessel or receptacle, such as 12, and into a body of Water contained in said receptacle. The Water in the receptacle 12 will rise through and along the stem and body of the medicated member and encroach upon the medicated portion thereof and dampen the poisonous substance therein. The body portion of the medicated member being horizontal the water will stand in drops or appreciable quantities thereon and will attract flies, which feeding, as illustrated in Fig. 3, will consume a portion of the poisoned liquid and be destroyed thereby.
I do not desire myself to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of the medicated member nor exact construction thereof.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a fly-exterminator, a frame composed of a single piece of wire bent into a circular form at its central portion and its end por tions twisted together and covered with a bibulous material as shown and described.
2. Amember of a fly-exterminator, consist ing of a metal frame having an extension in the form of-a handle and two mating pieces of bibulous material fixed together-and inclosing the metal frame, in combination with an open-topped vessel adapted to retain liquid, to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
3. A fly-exterminator comprising a movable member composed of a metal frame covered with bibulous material and an extension or handle portion projecting at an angle, and an open-topped vessel, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
GEORGE A. CARPENTER.
