JAMES I. BROWN, OF OTTUMIVA, IOIVA.
BRACKET FOR HOLDING WlNDOW-SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 632,510, dated September 5, 1899. Application filed March 11, 1899. Serial No. 708,6'75f No model.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES I. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Holding \Vindow-,
Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved bracket whereby a window-sash may be supported in an upright position in a plane at a right angle to the window and the weight-cords disconnected and secured to the window-frame by hooks and cords or ropes, so as to allow the sash to be cleaned, painted, or glazed without any liability of accidents occurring.
The novel features of my invention will be fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window-frame, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the shelf. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the window-frame.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular shelf or board formed at one end on the under side with a stop or stationary clamp 2 and also formed with a number of rack-teeth 3.
The numeral 4: designates two links pivotally connected with the sides of the shelf and also pivotally connected with the upper end of a depending bar 5, provided with a stop 6 at the lower end, with which engages a pointed or beveled brace-bar 7, which also engages with said rack-teeth.
The numeral 8 designates the side rails of a window frame, provided with plates 9, formed with slots 10, with which engage headed screws 10, secured to the removable strips 12, which retain the lower sash in place.
The numeral 13 designates the sash-cords, which are adapted to be disconnected from the sash and connected with hooks 14, attached to a link 15, to which is secured one end of a rope 16, the other end of which is provided with a hook 17, adapted to engage under the lower edge of the lower rail of a window-frame, and thus preventing said sashcords from being drawn up by the weight where the cords are disconnected from the sash.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The stop at the outer end of the shelf is engaged with the outer side of the lower rail of the window-frames, with the depending bar resting against the wall of the building and the brace-bar engaged with the stop at the lower end of the same and with the rack-teeth of the shelf. The bracket or shelf will then be firmly held in place, so that a window-sash may be supported thereon in an upright position at a right angle to the window-frame. To remove the window-sash from the frame, the strips 12 are removed and the sash-cords disconnected and attached to the hooks 14:. The hook 17 is then engaged with the edge of the lower rail of the windowframe, thus holding said cords and preventing them being pulled up by the weights. As the shelf is located in the room, there is no liability of accident to persons employed in cleaning, painting, or glazing the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- A bracket comprising a shelf provided on the under side of one of its ends with a stop to engage a window-sill, and on the under side of its opposite end with a series of rackteeth, in combination with links pivotally secured to opposite sides of-the shelf and adapted to engage the inner edge of the windowsill; a depending bar pivotally secured at its upper end to said links and provided at its lower end with a stop 6 and a brace-bar beveled at its ends to engage the rack-teeth and stop 6.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES I. BROWN.
