NiTnn STATES THOMAS JENSEN, OF
ARENDAL, NORWAY.
PLATE-SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,351, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed December 6, 1898. Serial No. 698,435- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JENSEN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway, residing at Arendal, Norway, have invented Improvements in Plate-Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the features of structure and arrangement hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 a perspective, of the tool in the act of cutting a plate. Fig. 4 is an end view of the shears. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
The shears comprise the two limbs c c, pivoted together at one end f and having the cutting blades or jaws e e at their other ends. Each of these limbs has a laterally-arranged portion, (marked, respectively, pp,) and these form a recess or socket between them, as indicated in Fig. 2. An arm (1 is pivoted at b" to the portion 19, and this arm is bent, as shown in Fig. 6, so that its ends are out of line. The upper end of the arm 6] lies in the depression or recess formed by the laterallybent part 19 of the arm 0, and it has a recess in its edge, which receives the pivot projection I) of the lever a, which is pivoted to the member a at the part 19 that is within the depression or recess formed by the laterally-extending portion. The lower bent end of the arm d is pivoted in the recess of the member a at b, as before stated. It will be seen that the pivot b is integral with the lever a and simply engages the notch in the arm d.
It will be seen from Fig. 2 that the cutting edge of e, the inner upper face of the arm d, the face of pivot b, the inner side of lever a, and inner side of member 0 all lie in the same plane, while the face of the jaw e, the face of the lower end of the bent arm d, and the inner face of the member 0 all lie in the same plane. By this arrangement the advantage is gained that there are no projecting parts presented which will work against the edge of the metal plate during the cutting, but the plate will pass straight through the shears without having its edge deformed in anyway.
Having, now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Plate-shears comprising the limbs c, 0', having laterallyarranged portions 19, j 19, forming a recess or socket between them, an arm d having its upper and lower parts out of line, the lower part of said arm being pivoted in the recess of the member 0' and the upper part of the said arm lying in the recess of the other member and the lever a pivoted to the member 0 and connected with the arm d, substantially as described.
2. In combination ina plate-shears, thetwo members each having a recess in its inner face, a lever pivoted to the one member and an arm pivotally connected with said lever and with the other member, said arm being bent intermediate of its length, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the two members having the recesses forming a socket between them and the bent arm therein pivoted to one member and having a notch in its edge, a lever pivoted to one of the members the said lever having a pivot 1) extending therefrom to engage the socket, substantially asdescribed.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS JENSEN.
