ABRAHAM BRADLEY, OF UTIOA, NEIV YORK.
PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,305, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed February 8, 1899- Serial No. 704,871. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Utica, Oneida county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pliers; and it consists in the arrangement and disposition of the parts hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved pliers with the jaws closed. Fig. 2 represents the same as Fig. 1 with the jaws open. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 1. Figs. 4c, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are details of the parts of the pliers. Fig. 10 is a crosssection on line C D. Fig. 11 is a cross-section on line A B, Fig. 1.
Having described my invention with reference to the figures illustrated in the drawings, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail, and in such description similar numerals refer to corresponding parts in the several views. Y
My invention embraces an article of manufacture.
I form the plier-handles 1 2 from sheet-steel cut to proper size and brought into the forms illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 by what I would term drop-forging or compression.
The plier-handles are made interchangeable and can be used either as a right or left hand part without change of form. I accomplish this by forming pivot-ear 3 with a projecting offset and ear 4 with a depressed offset, while on handle 2 I form ear 3 with a depression, and ear 4 is formed with a projecting offset.
' Handles 1 2 are brought together, and rivet 5 is inserted through holes 6 6, thus forming the pivotal point of the handles.
Jaws 7 7 are formed by compression of sheetsteel cut to the requisite size and formed and pressed into the shape best illustrated in Figs. 3, 6, and 7. Each jaw has two parallel walls 8 8, Fig. 3, with opening 9, Figs. 3, 6, and 7, for the reception or the removal of the plier-jaws 1O 10, so that they may be removed or replaced with any form of plier-jaw which may be desired. Each jaw 7 7 is provided with ears 7.
One ear has a projecting surface and the companion ear has a depressed surface. (Best illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7.) By this arrangement of the pivot-ears the jaws may be used interchangeably and may also be used either as a right or left hand jaw. In ears 7 7 I provide perforations 7 ,which accommodate rivet 7. At the lower end of the jaws I provide perforations 7, which receive rivet 7 When the jaws of my pliers are opened, as
indicated in Fig. 2, so that by placing between the cutters 10 10 the article to be operated on, the cutters are brought in contact therewith by a system of compound leverage so arranged as to give the most effective grip on the article to be operated on.
I have provided interchangeable or removable cutters 10 10,which are provided with cutting edges 10, Figs. 8 and 9, and with vertical shoulders 10 10 which fit against vertical 7o face 11 on the jaws for furnishing a solid seat for the cutters. I provide flanges 12, extending from the face of the shoulders, of the requisite size and shape to fit snugly in slot 9 of the jaws, so as to maintain their connection with the jaws when the tool is operated.
By the arrangement of the parts as heretofore more particularly pointed out the entire pliers, excepting the cutters, are formed of sheet-steel as an article of manufacture without the use of mills or grinders, and the cost of the tool is very much reduced and its physical strength isincreased. The only portion of the pliers which requires grinding or machine-work is the cutters, which are so arranged as to be made interchangeable in the jaws by the construction heretofore pointed out and claimed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' 1. An article of manufacture consisting of pliers, having sheet-metal handles with projecting and depressed ears in each handle; jaws made from sheet metal having parallel walls and an opening at the head of the jaws of greater width than the space between the walls, and the cutters, for the purposes stated.
2. The pliers, in combination therewith of the jaws having parallel pivoted walls and pivoted handles, the jaws having openings at opening in the head of the jaws, for the purposes stated. IO
Signed by me at Utica, New York, this 4th their ends for receiving the cutters, each jaw having a projecting and a depressed ear for receiving the pivot and the cutters, for the In a plier the pivoted jaws, formed from one piece of sheet metal having an opening at the head of each jaw, in combination with the removable cutters, arranged to fit the ABRAHAM BRADLEY.
purposes stated. day of February, 1899.
