Letters Patent No. 63,228, dated Zlarch 26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMMERSI.

TO rALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DEVEREUX, of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, 'have invented a certain new and improved Hammer-Handle Fasteningg" and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a perspective view of my improved fastening.
Figure II is an elevation of the seme as applied to a hammer.
Figure III is a section showing the connection thereof with the head of a hammer.
Figure IV is a perspective View of same.
The nature of this invention consists in making a metallic strap, which forms a dove-tail in the eye of the hammer and extends on to the handle on either side, and is riveted through the handle, as a means of fastening and strengthening the handle. This improvement is applicable to hammers of all kinds, sledgcs, hatchcts, axes, and all similar tools.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in cach of the figures.
AA represent two straps, which ferm the connection of the handle to the head of the hammer, one being attached to cach side of the handle, as shown in the drawings. They are both alike, and each is constructed as follows: The top of the strap is bent at right angles so as to form a flange, al, which fits into a groove or recess made in the head of the hammer. A dove-tail is formed in the strap below this flange, as shown at a2, the length of which is equal tothe length of the eye of the head, and corresponds exactly to a dove-tailed groove or recess formed in the eye on either side thereof. Rivet holes, are made near the lower end of the strap for the purpose of riveting the two straps together by the rivets b passing through thc handle. The lower end of the strap'is made broader than the top part, forming upon either side a curved flange or wing, a4, which fianges clasp the handle and strengthen the same, thereby compensating for any weakness in the handle produced bythe riveting. C represents the handle, and D the head of the hammer. The handle may be of' common construction, but the head, when manufactured in combination with my improved fastening strap, is made as shown in the drawings. cZ represents the eye `or opening for the reception of the handle C. di represents the recesses formed in the top of thehead, upon each side of the eye, into which the flanges al of the fastening strap are fitted, as shown in Figs. II and Hl. d3 represents the dove-tailed grooves or recesses cut within and upon each side of the'eyc which correspond with and receive the dove-tailed part a2 of the straps. It will be'obscrved that the dove-tails a2 and the flanges al may be used separately, and still a good and sufficient fastening will be formed by either` of them. When this improvement is to be applied to old tools, the heads of which are not provided with the dove-tailed grooves or recesses (Z3, the same may be dispensed with, and the flanges al alone will be sufficient to hold the head firmly in place. The recesses dz may or may not, in that case, be filed into the top of the head if desired.
My improvement remedies the main difficulty experienced in the use of various tools, viz, the gradual working loose of the handle thereof, and furnishes a fastening therefor which cannot be surpassed by anything heretofore used for that purpose. The straps are removable, and in case one should break it can easily be replaced by a newone, or if the handle should break the same straps may be used for fastening a new handle to the tool in like manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Attaching a hammer or analogous tool to its handle, by mea-ns of the plate A, when said plate is constructed and applied `to thehaudle as described, in combination with the recess (Z3 in the eye of thehammer to receive the plate, substantially as set forth. i
