TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLiAM H. CIiAnKE, of St. Anthonys Falls, in the county of Hennepin, and in the State. of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Gas Machines, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. Inthe annexed drawings, making part -of this specifieatien i A represents a cylinder made of suitable size, with a closed bottom and open top. Within this cylinder is another, B, which is made several inches smaller in diameter. 0 represents a float, which is closed at topan'd open at bottom, and which fits loosely over the inner cylinder B. Y The space between the two cylinders is filled with any suitable solution. The float O is provided at its upper end with two arms which carry friction-rollers, and these rollers run against the-upright guides E E. The object of this arrangement is to steady the float, and support and direct its upper end as it rises and falls between the two oylinders; Within the cylinder 13 are fitted and soldered properly three or more annular metallic plates, 1. 7 These plates are placed at a proper dis tance apart, and are intended for receiving upon their upper surfaces the gasoline to be converted into gas. There is one pipe, M, to each plate I, so that when it is desired to deliver the gasoline upon anys'pecificd plate it is poured into the corresponding pipeM of said plate. These pipes M run a short distance above the upper surfaces oi the plates,'as seen. 1 L L are pipes which also run into the machine, and through the plates I, with their ends terminating on a level with the upper surfaces of the said platesl These pipes I; are for the purpose ofearrying as any residuum from the plates. ()repre sents a tank or purifier, which is connected-to the cylinder A by means ofa channel or pipe, X. This tank is provided with a man-hole at S, which is secured in any approved manner, and als o with apipe, B, which conveys the gas away to'any desired point to be used. Connected to this pipe R is the pifpe'P, which receives enough gas from the tank to supply heat to the machine. represents a shaft, supported upon a frame connected to the machine, which said shaft has connected with it a spring and suitable gearing to give motion to a pitman, U, which operates the bellows: W represents a rod with a pawl attached to it, which said pawl is intended to work in connection with a ratchet-wheel which is used with the gearing. A red, G, which plays up and down with the float C, is provided with'two pins, or. their equivalent, which'act at suitable times upon the rodW, and
cause it to throw the gearing in or out of connection with the pitman. When the float has been pumped full of air and rises as high as it is designed to go the one pin on red G operates the rod W so as to throw the gearing out of connection with the pitman and. thiisstopa the pump. When the float falls as far down as it is designed to go, the other pin on red G throws'th e gearing in connect-ion with the pitman, and the bellows being set in motion the-float is filled with air again. This arrangement of machinery may be varied, and does not necessarily form a part of this machine or invention. The air being iorced into chamber'l), through pipe K, by means of the pump or bellows T, is driven down by the weight of the float 0., through the pipes 3i :5, and is thus brought into contact with the gasoline. The hot air or heat created by the pipe H converts the gasoline into gas,- and said gas pnssesofi through pipes JJ, and through pipe X, to the purifier or tank 0. Within the tank 0, lime or any other Suitable substance is placed for the purpese of purifying the gas. -A layer of cotten is introduced into the tank for breaking the force of the gas.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, is-
1. The arrangement of the plates I I, in the cylinder'B, and providing the same with air pipes b B, supply pipes M M, discharge pipes L L,'and gas-transmitting pipes J J, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 2. 'The combination of the cylinders A and B, float C, bellows T, and tank 0, provided with lime and cotton, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3; The arrangement of the pipe H with the pipe P for supplying heat to the machinefrcmits own gas,
substantially as specified.
