APPARATUS FOR CASTING STEREOTYPE-PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jul 23, 1907.
Application filed July 17,1906. Qerial No. 326,639.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GUMMING ANNAND', of
Cornwallis street, South Shields, Durham, England, printers engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatns for Casting Stereotype-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to the automatic supply of molten metal to stereotype casting boxes and its object is to'provide an improved apparatus for the purpose, whe'reby the molten metal can be supplied couveniently and expeditiously to a number of casting boxes disposed around the melting pot.
According to this invention I employ a horizontal swinging arm or arms mounted together with a pump on a vertical pivot in the melting pot, the said arm being adapted to b'e swung round with the pump to bring the arm over the casting box or boxes. The arm or arms may be set at-an inclination from the horizontal to assist the flow of the metal.
The casting boxes are arranged around the melting furnace preferably at a distance from it, so that the heat from the furnace does not inconvenience the attendants.
The accompanying drawings represent an example of apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention. p v i Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a vertical section and a plan of the apparatus; Fig. 3 being a front elevation of the outlet of the radial arm thereof, with the cover plate It removed.
a is the melting pot of any usual or suitable kind and heated by a furnace b.
c is a radial arm bolted to a pump d-pivotally mounted with the arm 0 so as to turn therewith in thecenter of the melting pot in a conical bearing 2 and an upper bearing e in the armf above the melting pot.
g g are valves in the bottom of the pump which allow the metal toenter the cylinder but close when the piston is forced down by thecounterweighted hand lever it connected to the piston rod h which passes down through an upward extension of the pump cylinden As shown the lever k may work between guides 11 provided with a series of holes through which a pin may be passed to limit the stroke of the piston and so adjust the amount of metal delivered by one stroke of the pump to the desired quantity in a manner previously known in stereotype casting apparatus. The pivoting arm a is formed with a channel 0 communieating with the pump chamber by a conduit j and covered by a plate I bolted to the arm 0 and which can be removed for purposes of inspection or repair. The arm is preferably lined with asbestos cement or other non-conducting material Z, to prevent the metal losing its heat on the way to the casting boxes. The outlet from the arm is directed downwards and widened in the manner shown.
.ln use, the casing boxes are arranged around the melting pot. The arm 0 is then swung round over the first casting box and the pump is operated to deliver the required amount of metal through the arm a into this box. The arm and pump are then turned to bring the armover the next casting box, and so on. The metal 1 can thus be run into the casting boxes successively in a very practical and convenient manner and Without discomfort to the attendant. As the pump turns with the arm or spout, the operating handle always follows it into the required position to be operated by the attendant.
The swinging arm is preferably slightly inclined from the horizontal as shown to assist the flow of the metal.
It will be evident that m'ore than one-swinging arm may be employed if desired,
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In apparatus for casting stereotype plates, a melting pot, an arm pivotallyanounted in the same and adapted to be swung-'iound approximately horizontally to bring it successively over a plurality of casting boxes disposed about the melting pot, and a pump mounted in the melting pot and rotatable with such arm adapted to deliver metal from the pot through the arm to the casting boxes. In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing; witnesses.
ROBERT CUMMING ANNAND. Witnesses:
COLIN McRoma, J EAN MITCHELL.
