FRANK H. LUMBARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GERTS, LUMBARD do COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR BRUSHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,131, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed March 30, 1899.
I0 to whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, FRANK H. LUMBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chioago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a detachable handle-socket for brushes and the like and is more especially intended for the class of brushes used in polishing waxfloors. The brushes are weighted and when the handle is attached necessarily occupy considerable space in storage and transportation. The handle and socket-casting are'permanently secured together, but by means of the arrangement shown the socket part may be conveniently connected or disconnected from the brush for storage or shipment.
Figure 1 is aviewin perspective of abrush embodying the improved features. Fig. 2 is a plan section on line 2, Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the angular line 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a transverse section on the angular line 4, Fig. 2.
A represents the brush proper; B, a brushweight; 0, a socket-casting, and D the handle.
The brush or cap weight B is provided with a chamber E and is mounted on the back of the brush and rigidly secured thereto by means of bolts a 01,. The top of the brushweight is provided with the longitudinal slot c and the bisecting transverse slot a opening into the chamber E. In this chamber is loosely inserted a slide F, adapted to have a limited longitudinal movement therein. This slide is provided with the recess a and the edges on opposite sides with the curved-out bearing-notches a a G is a loosely-inserted locking-bolt and is provided on the lower end with the square head Z), which is adapted to engage with an angle or V-shaped notch b, Fig. 2, when in its lowermost or locking position. From this Serial No. 711,049. (No model.)
notch to the end the upper part of the slide F is cut away in a horizontal plane on one side, as shown at b so that the slide is free to move endwise when the locking-bolt is withdrawn, so as to bring the lower head end against the top of the chamber.
The handle-socket C is provided with a foot extension H, having bearing-pins b b on opposite sides thereof. This foot extension is adapted to be inserted down through the slot a and projects into the recess a the bearing-pins seating loosely in the notches a, formed in the respective edges of the slide. WVhen connecting the handle-socket with the brush, the slide should be in position to bring the bearing-notches a directly under and in line with the transverse slot a when the vfoot extension, with its bearingpins, may be inserted and then used as a lever to propel the slide in the direction of the locking-bolt. hen the notch b in the side comes into a coincident relation with said bolt, the same will drop down into the looking position shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. The handle is now in position for use and. may be inclined in the direction of either end of the brush.
The handle and socket are conveniently disengaged by grasping the upper projecting end of the locking-bolt and raising it up to its highest position, when the slide may be moved endwise to bring the bearing-pins on the foot of the socket into line with the transverse slot in the weight-cap and then lifted out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A brush-weight secured to the back of a brush, a chamber, formed in said weight, the slot, opening into the chamber, a movable slide, and a handle-socket, having a foot extension entering said chamber and detachably engaging said slide, substantially as de scribed. I
2. The combination with a brush, a chambered weight, secured to the back thereof, said weight being provided in the top with a longitudinal slot and a bisecting transverse slot, a slide, having an endwise movement in In testimony whereof I affix my signature said chamber, a handle-socket, having a foot in presence of two Witnesses. extension and provided with bearin -pins and adapted to loosely engage with n etches FRANK LUMBARD' 5 in said slide, and means for locking said slide Witnesses:
when the handle-socket is held in its work- L. M. FREEMAN,
ing position. L. B. COUPLAND.
