DEVICE FOR FACILITATING LIGHTING 0F CYCLE 0R OTHER LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 631,891, dated August 29, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY JACK- SON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland,residing at Melrose,Heaton,Brad ford, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Facilitating the Lighting of Cycle or other Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for facilitating the lighting of cycle and other lamps, and refers more particularly to devices of this kind such as are self-contained and designed to be applied to such lamps, the object of this present invention being to provide simple and eiicient means whereby such devices may be easily and firmly secured in place without the employment of any skilled labor being required, as soldering and other methods of attachment of this kind requiring the employment of skilled labor may be dispensed with.
In carrying my invention into practical effect the form of device to which this improvement is preferably applied comprises a hollow cylindrical or conical body furnished with a fixed collar or shoulder at one end, the other extremity being cut away in a slanting direction, where it is covered with a plate of flexible springy material roughened or serrated upon its under surface for the purpose of causing matches to ignite when they are passed through the body of the said device and beneath the plate. this invention upon the outer periphery of the cylindrical or conical body of the lighting device a suitable screw-thread is formed,while I further provide a detachable collar or ring correspondingly screw-threaded upon its inner periphery, so that it may be screwed over the body of the said lighting device for the purpose of securing it -in position, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood, I will now proceed to describe same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevationof alamp-lighting device, showing myimprovement, Fig. 2 being a longitudinal section, while Fig. 3 shows the device as inserted through the side of a lamp.
Now according to` All views are drawn to a considerably-enlarged scale and like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout.
As shown in the accompanying drawings,
-the body a of the lighting device is screwthreaded upon its outer periphery, while at one end it is provided with afixed collar or shoulder b, the outer extremity being out away in a slanting direction, as shown, where it is covered by a plate c, of flexible springy material serrated upon its under surface. A slot e is cut in the body a, substantially parallel with its axis and near one side of it. One end portion of the plate c is forced into the slot e, so that it is securely held in position, and its other end portion is bent to an obtuse angle, so that it bears against the beveled end a of the body a. The movable collar or ring d is screw-threaded upon its inner periphery and designed to screw over the body 05. y
In order to insert and secure the device in position, a hole of suiicient size is bored in the side g of the lamp in such a position as to bring the cut-away extremity of the body a in close proximity to the wick-tube when passed through same, and it is firmly secured in place by screwing on the collar or ring d in such a manner as to tightly grip the side g of the lamp between the fixed collar or shoulder b and the movable screw-threaded collar.
